The Canary Islands Discovery Cruise

Take a glance behind the ostentatious backdrop of the gleaming super-resorts that have come to characterise parts of the Canary Islands, and you’re bound to be surprised. Before I climbed aboard, I’d read fabled accounts of a remarkably varied - not to mention immensely beautiful - natural landscape that peaked my curiosity. Plus I’m a fan of luxurious, high-tech yachts (let’s be honest, who isn’t?) so I was excited nonetheless to embark on our journey.

Once you move past swathes of lobster red tourists, the true nature of these beautiful islands reveal themselves. Though I hate to use the cliché, there’s something for every taste. From the rich dense rainforests in beautiful La Palma, to vibrant bustling cities like Gran Canaria and the infamous beaches of Tenerife. Daring adventure-goers had the chance to venture up volcanoes and mountains on optional trips, whereas the sun-worshippers amongst us (myself included) had plenty of opportunity to simply bask in the glorious year round sun. Yet the Canary Islands are more than simply a pretty face - centuries of history and art are laid bare to explore in the numerous cities and towns, a tantalising mix of Moroccan and Spanish culture that gives the archipelago its distinctive appeal.

With so much to do and see, it’s easy to overlook the boat itself. But this was no ordinary yacht – in fact our home for the week looked like it could have been plucked straight out of a port in St. Tropez. With the warm colours that mimicked the Moroccan influences and the spacious, elegant interiors, the entire yacht oozed modern opulence that made relaxing effortless after a day in the sun. The Canary Islands may be a major tourist destination, but the charming pueblos and spectacular volcanic vistas are certainly some of Spain’s best kept secrets. I won’t tell anyone if you won’t!
