“It was a smell I didn’t recognise, one which blossomed and grew in my head and sank down into my heart – it was the thyme, emerging from the gravel of the heath”
Provence is a treat for every one of the senses. Nothing could be better than the incredible countryside, the scent of lavender and thyme which waft through the air, and the sumptuous delights of the local cuisine, all wrapped up in a soft, hazy heat which warms you to your core. The Le Mas de La Rose appears as if it were plucked straight from one of Pagnol’s novels – its charming 17th century features and dry stone walls have been perfectly preserved to blend seamlessly into the surrounding 25 hectares of unspoilt heathland, giving an unmistakeable feeling of seclusion and exclusivity. I felt like I was now an onlooker in one of my favourite books – excitement doesn’t cover it!
Inside I was greeted by the owners with characteristic Provençal warmth and ushered up to my room, where the traditional rustic style had been given a stylish contemporary twist. It featured a sophisticated palette of taupes and soft greys and yet still maintained an element of its signature southern style, with a king sized bed in the middle that I couldn’t wait to dive into! Although I could have quite easily taken a soak in the marble bath and dozed the day away, I felt an afternoon lounging by the pool was sorely deserved.
“The neighbor harnessed his horse and we went at a trot, while at the crest of the hills half a large red sun was watching us through the pines.”
Dinner that evening was a delightful affair. The hotel’s signature restaurant Le Potager is highly coveted in the area, thanks to not only its outstanding quality of food but its dedication to sourcing local organic produce. Yet the best was well and truly saved for last; a post-dinner walk which showcased one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen, framed by the idyllic hills and valleys that have enchanted the likes of Marcel Pagnol and countless others over the years. It’s a delight that has to be seen to be believed – trust me!
