The Hotel Lamée ***** is very central, which is partly why I chose it, just minutes’ walk from the magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral and its square. I was instantly struck by the hotel's decor, a designer blend of retro vintage with uber-modern elements. My room was just what I wanted: luxurious, comfortable, calm, with a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the cathedral. The linens and fabrics were wonderful, sumptuous, and in rich natural tones, with creative splashes of vibrant colour in the upholstery. There was a complimentary bottle of wine on my arrival, but I decided to venture out onto the roof-top bar as it was coming up to sunset…
Sitting up on the roof terrace, among the Gothic church spires and ancient rooftops glowing orange in the evening sun, I couldn't help but feel I'd found the perfect silver lining to my husband going away. I ordered a cocktail and sat back taking in the cathedral opposite and the atmosphere of Vienna drifting up to greet me. Though the menu looked very tempting at Lamée's gourmet restaurant, the lure of exploring Vienna was too great and I left to wander the streets map-less; with the Stepansplatz as such a good landmark, I didn't worry about getting lost.
On my way out the next morning, I started speaking with the friendly receptionist who asked how my trip was going and arranged a host of activities for me. The staff at the Hotel Lamée went out of their way to make me feel welcome and cared for. Between them, the boutique luxury of the hotel, and that view, my stay in the heart of Vienna was so memorable. When my husband returned from his trip and we exchanged stories, he was the one envious of me, and we made a deal to go back to Vienna and the Hotel Lamée - together this time!
