Provence became the foremost destination for a host of artists, poets and writers who were seeking inspiration in the 20th century; in fact, it might be quicker to list those who didn’t venture through in search of finding their muse. I headed to Provence on the footsteps of luminaries such as Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Somerset Maugham, Katherine Mansfield, van Gogh, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, Monet, Munch, Klein… and, of course, Provence’s most famous local, Cezanne. There is something magical about Provence that draws artists to it, and I arrived at the Mas de la Fouque **** determined to uncover its secret.
There are many spots in Europe that are full of history. There are few, however, that transport you to times gone by as deftly as Provence does. It is a region of untold, immeasurable delights to discover: Ruined Roman amphitheatres, provincial (if you’ll excuse the pun) farmers’ markets, harbour sides and beaches, fragrant vineyards and craggy, lavender cliff-tops… the reason every artist of note came to Provence was simply because Provence had something to offer everyone. A Provençal hotel has a difficult job ahead of it. In such a beautiful, inspirational location, how can it live up to its surroundings?

The Mas de la Fouque has found a way to live up to the region’s reputation. Its technique is astonishingly simple, yet genius in its execution. It provides a luxury retreat that allows the natural, pastoral beauty of Provence to shine through every minute of your holiday. Nested at the edge of the renowned Camargue National Park, the Mas de la Fouque is more like an African safari than a chic boutique hotel in its approach to wildlife, as it is overlooking land that homes black and white swans, wild ducks, flamingos, bulls and, of course, the Camargue horses.

The Mas de la Fouque offers far more than just a stunning Provençal landscape. On site, I alternated between lounging in an outdoor heated pool, an indoor pool, a hammam, and an outside Jacuzzi. There is a fully equipped spa offering a good selection of treatments, tennis lessons to keep you active, or Petanque courts, if you’d like to try a regional favourite. When you want to get out and see Provence, there are options for both boat rides and bicycles locally, but I’d strongly recommend going the traditional route and saddling up for an iconic horseback ride through the Camargue.

Mas de la Fouque **** is located in the near the small town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, in the heart of the Camargue and an hour or so from Montpellier.
BY PLANE
Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes Airport, (52 km) is located 45 minutes north of the hotel. HOP! operate flights from Paris and Lyon and Ryanair fly from London. Equidistant is the Montpellier Airport (50 km) is located 45 minutes northwest of the hotel, and it is served by regular flights from Paris and London, as well as seasonal flights from European capitals and major cities.
Marseille-Provence Airport (105 km) is the closest well served international airport, located 1 hour 20 minutes south-east of the hotel, it receives flights from many capitals and major cities across Europe.
HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL
- By airport transfer service: available to and from Montpellier Airport for 110€ each way.
-By car: we recommend renting a car from a car rental company, they can be easily found at the airport terminal, although it is cheaper to book online and in advance. Directions from Marseille Airport. Leave the airport, taking the D20 and following signs for the A7/ E714 towards Rognac. Continue for 20 km, taking the exit onto the A54/ E80 and merging onto N113 after 25 km. Take exit 4 toward Nîmes/ Arles/ Saintes Maries de la Mer, taking the D570 south. Take a right onto the D85 and then left onto D38. After a kilometre or so the hotel will be on your left.
