I’ll admit that when first hearing the words “holiday” and “sports retreat” in the same breath I was dubious. Yet my first visit to the Open Village Sports Hotel and Spa **** lead me to discover that, on the contrary, one of the best sources of relaxation can be found on a tennis court in the bright, early morning. As I set foot within the hotel I found myself transported from the historic charm of Guimarães and into a world of crisp minimalist modernity. An ultra-chic monochrome palette reigns supreme here, creating an atmosphere which was as refreshing as it was relaxing.
Their number one priority, besides the obvious dedication to sporting excellence, was absolute indulgence. I found a whole array of state-of-the-art home comforts available in my room, a Zen haven that provided the perfect place to rest after sun soaked days exploring. After tennis at sunrise, walks through the countryside and laps in the beautifully serene indoor pool, the sight of my lily white room at the end of the day was a blissful sight for sore eyes – and sore legs! Even on the days when my laziness overcame my desire to “be good”, the Open Spa Village beckoned me in with the promise of unlimited relaxation in the Hammam or the sauna. Regardless of what my day held in store, there was no doubt that it would leave me feeling reinvigorated and renewed.
As a foodie, I’ll use any excuse to experience the local cuisine on holiday - usually employing the classic, half-hearted excuse that “holiday calories don’t count”, but here at the Open Village Sports Hotel and Spa **** no excuse was needed to indulge. From decadent breakfasts that set you up for the day ahead to contemporary takes on classic Portuguese cuisine in the evening, there was always something sumptuous to whet my appetite. Whether your dream holiday involves action and adventure or unbridled relaxation, rest assured the Open Village Sports Hotel **** will spoil you rotten!
