Paris has always danced to the beat of a different drum - so no wonder it’s been a magnet for the world’s brightest and best artists for as long as the city itself can remember. Yet I can’t pretend I’m not also enticed by the luxury this city exudes at every turn and corner, Paris being arguably the world expert when it comes to indulging yourself. And what could be more indulgent than staying in a living work of art? Where some hotels shy away from bold colour, the Hôtel Gaston (thankfully) embraces it, along with Paris’ classic cool and joie de vivre.
A far cry from the delightfully traditional Haussmannien façade, you are first greeted by bright, zesty yellow shades paired next to bare red brick; this is modern design at its best. I felt more like I’d stumbled into a nearby independent art gallery rather than a boutique hotel. But don’t be intimidated by the hotel’s avant-garde beauty! The niche, slightly hipster vibe also has a warmth to it that will have you charmed instantly – not the least because of the excellent staff on hand to make you feel right at home in the city of light.
Whether you prefer taking the city at breakneck speed or languid days watching the world go by while sipping wine by the carafe, anyone can agree that there’s nothing more satisfying than clicking the door shut behind you and surrendering to silence. And though my boyfriend and I were certainly tempted by the prospect of nesting in our cosy-yet-chic room and feasting on room service, Paris’ most postcard-perfect sights were too tantalisingly close by to resist. I never thought I could find anything new in Paris to surprise me, but it was my stay at the Hôtel Gaston that had me falling in love all over again.
