Brussels may have numerous plazas dotted throughout the city, but I would argue that not one was as colourful as Place Jourdan. Home to what the New York Times once declared “The World’s Best French Fries” (an immensely important accolade in my book) it’s filled with cafés and restaurants that spill onto the cobbled tiles, ringing with laughter and good cheer all round. I came here eager to get under the surface of Brussels and discover what else lay in waiting besides politicians and diplomats. Never one to skimp on luxury, or the perfect location, the Sofitel Brussels Europe was an obvious choice.
Stepping inside from the hubbub outside I found myself in a bright and elegant atmosphere. Right from my first introduction to the reception staff, I was greeted as if I was an impeccably dressed diplomat - rather than a travel weary tourist in her trusty flight leggings and chunky trainers. Being able to collapse on the enormous bed – a little added dash of luxury found in Sofitel hotels – and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in the tranquillity of my room was a dream. One deliciously refreshing rain shower later and I was ready to hit the city streets and explore.
Often surprisingly tired after days of people watching in cafés and getting lost in Brussels’ patchwork of neighbourhoods, I was ever grateful to the hotel’s Hammam to revive me before dinner, while my trips to the gym kept my Belgian waffle-based diet in check. My visits to the The 1040 Restaurant soon became an evening ritual, charmed by not only the excellent Belgian cuisine but the casual-yet-sophisticated atmosphere and, as ever, the impeccable service.
The Sofitel Brussels Europe left me well and truly smitten with Brussels. All I need now is an excuse to come back – and soon!
