La Residence Mykonos Hotel Suites ★★★★★

Glamorous luxury on one of Greece's most vibrant islands.

By Jo Weston, correspondent for VeryChic
I have a friend with two teenage daughters. The eldest had just finished her A Levels, and the younger was just behind. One morning I had a call from her… “Hi, I have an offer you can't refuse.” She explained her husband couldn’t make it on their family holiday to Greece and please would I come to keep her company. I was surprised when she said that Mykonos, famous for its night-life, was the destination for their family holiday. “It's for the girls,” she explained, “It's the only way we could persuade them to come… but wait until you see the hotel, it's gorgeous!” She was right about that, La Residence Suites Hotel ***** helped me learn that Mykonos has much more to offer than great parties.

The uninhabited island is beautiful to explore by foot, with little coastal paths winding along cliffs. There's a museum on the island too, helping you to appreciate the antiquity behind the temple remains, enigmatic frescos and monuments.

  • Mykonos Windmills – you have to visit these four windmills overlooking the harbour and grand vistas. They are the icon of Mykonos and one of the best places to watch the sun go down. The enchanting walk back down the hill in the gloaming, as the town starts to light up and twinkle is worth the trip. They are easy to walk to from Little Venice.

  • Church of Paraportiani – this group of 5 churches, four melded into the one main building, are just so photogenic. The stark white against the blue of the Greek sky and the soft curves of the architecture are endlessly satisfying. The church is easy to find it town, but it can be worth going early before the crowds.

  • Matoyianni Street – a winding and beautiful shoppers’ paradise. Quaint and charming yet with some lovely shops. Be sure to take little side-roads to explore the labyrinthine wonder of old Mykonos’s narrow streets.
  • Avra Restaurant – named after the Greek word for 'breeze', Avra is a refreshing oasis of calm in a central location. The setting is in either a beautiful courtyard garden, blooming with bougainvillea, or the elevated rooftop terrace under the stars. Either way, you get the same fresh, delicious Greek cuisine served by friendly and attentive staff.
