Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg - MGallery ★★★★★

‘Belle Époque’ beauty in Proust’s personal seaside retreat.

Remarkable
8.9 /10
By Grace Weaving, VeryChic correspondent
Vividly captured by one of the greatest minds of a generation, Cabourg may be better known by the bookworms amongst us as Balbec, Proust’s fictional incarnation of his beloved seaside haven. His lengthy summers here from 1907 to 1914 centred on his place of residence, Le Grand Hotel, every inch immortalised in print. The very same Le Grand Hotel Cabourg - MGallery still stands today, a true literary monument beckoning you to stay awhile and explore its rich history, step by step, page by page.

Le Grand Hotel Cabourg - MGallery *****, the emblematic home of Marcel Proust, is situated next to the Casino de Cabourg just 1 minute's walk from the beach.

BY PLANE

  • Caen–Carpiquet Airport (CFR), sits 6km (3.7 mi) to the west of Caen and around 45 minute's drive from the hotel. Receiving only a handful of national flights however, a transfer for example in Lyon is required.

Deauville–Normandie Airport (DOL), sits 7 km (4 mi) east of Deauville and around 36 minute's drive from the hotel. However, it is also little served.

Rennes–Saint-Jacques Airport (RNS), sits about 6 km (3.7 mi) southwest of Rennes and around 2 hours and 30 minute's drive from the hotel. The airport receives mostly national flights, so a transfer via another French city, for example Paris or Lyon, is likely required.

We otherwise recommend flying to Paris and taking a train, car or bus from there.
