A fairy-tale, five-star farmhouse inn in the heart of Provence.

With the song of the cicadas and the scent of lavender in the air, it can only be Provence. A visit to the sunny South of France is always a treat, and the charming, ancient town of Avignon, between the picturesque departments of Gard and Bouches-du-Rhône, is no exception. Set just outside the town is the superb Auberge de Cassagne & Spa, a former Provencal farmhouse built in 1850, on land that belonged to the Cassagne Castle. It is now a delightful five-star inn with 35 rooms, 8 suites and a Presidential suite.
After passing numerous charming Provencal houses, with their tiled roofs and pink facades, we eventually pull up to the hotel and I am instantly under its spell. The salmon-pink walls peek out behind tendrils of climbing ivy that engulf the inn. The colourful shutters, the impeccable lawns with their dainty furniture – it’s everything I love. Entering the cosy reception area, fat wooden beams that have withstood two centuries stand guard as we check in.
Our undeniably romantic Garden View Suite is a large 50m2 suite that looks out onto the landscaped gardens. A large four-poster bed draped in red and white dominates one corner; around the corner is a relaxing sitting area in front of a beautiful wooden fireplace, and a beautiful antique desk sits near a window in another corner. The bathroom is in the mezzanine, stocked with goodies and plush towels for our stay. Dainty Laura Ashley tiles provide the backdrop to a hot tub big enough for two – with headrests! The splashes of contemporary life scattered throughout the suite blend perfectly with the romantic feel. The flat screen TV, modern sculptures, iPhone station and free Wi-Fi are all welcome additions to this traditional setting.
The inn possesses a superb spa and an indoor pool. We put on our fluffy bathrobes and head on over to have a massage. The massage is heavenly. There there’s the heated indoor pool and overflowing hot tub. The hotel also boasts a well-equipped gym.

Starting out as a small hotel-restaurant in 1969, the restaurant was awarded its first star in 1985. The chef, Philippe Boucher concocts delectable dishes with great produce around one major theme: Provence.
While it may be hard to tear yourself away from the hotel itself, it is of course also perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful surrounding region and its history rich towns.
