Hôtel Romanico Palace ★★★★

A rococo-style hotel close to the Eternal City's world-class sights.

By Jo Weston, VeryChic correspondent
For me, visiting Rome for the first time was a formative experience; I still remember it vividly. I was nineteen, with a little rucksack and little money. Now my niece was approaching the same age, and was not showing any signs of wanting to jump on a train to explore Europe. I couldn't bear the idea of her not knowing at least a bit of the Eternal City as she approached adulthood, so I whisked her away for a special birthday treat. She had it a lot better than I did at her age, staying at the elegant Hotel Romanico Palace ****.

Chic idea: to make the most of your time in Rome, book your tickets here in advance for a wide range of activities.

  • Enoteco Provincia Romana – despite being slap bang in the middle of tourist-ville, this slow-food-style wine bar has managed to remain pretty unknown, and retains a Roman authenticity. It’s the perfect prelude for visiting Foro Traiano. 82, 00197, Rome, Italy.
  • Square of the Knight of Malta - this lovely, leafy and ornate square is famous for the secret view it contains. Look through the Priorato's keyhole and you'll see St. Peter's Basilica perfectly framed by a hedge-lined avenue. Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, 4, 00153, Rome, Italy.
  • Ostia Antica – this was ancient Rome's bustling harbour city once upon a time. Now a vast and impressive archaeological site, it is also a great place to escape from the crowds.
