Aristi Mountain Resort ★★★★

Traditional stone buildings & modern comforts in a Greek mountain paradise.

Exceptional

By Jo Weston, VeryChic correspondent
The magic of the Greek islands is legendary, and it is easy to understand why so many sun-seekers head for the jewels of the Aegean every year. And the world-shaping ancient cities and treasures of Athens, Thessaloniki and Delphi retain their unique cultural magnetism. But there is so much more to Greece even than these wonders. Look further inland, to the mountainous north-west, and you will find a world of natural beauties that is just as irresistible and stunning as the more famous sites. On our latest walking trip, my sister and I were off to explore the villages of Zagori from the comfort of the Aristi Mountain Resort ****.

  • The City of Loannina, capital of the Epirus region, spreads out around a lovely lake. The Ethnographic Museum exhibits local pottery, costumes and tapestries, and period photographs. We loved it partly for the building that houses it: the Aslan Pasha Mosque, which has lovely views over the lake and the city. Νούτσου 8, Janina, Greece. Tel: (+30) 2651 026356.
  • The Vikos Gorge – the Grand Canyon of Greece – is a spectacular must-do walk. It will take you about five hours from the central square of Monodendri village to reach Vikos village. The path is very well marked. Try to go when the weather is dry or it can be difficult on slippery stones. Otherwise it’s fairly gentle. Zagoria, Greece.
  • For a well-earned treat after walking the Gorge (or just for a treat) the Kanela & Garyfallo restaurant in the village of Vitsa specialises in mushroom dishes, some home-grown and some collected from the surrounding mountains. The best mushroom risotto we had ever tasted! Caters for non-mushroom eaters too. Vitsa 44007, Greece (1.5 km away from Monodendri) Tel: (+30) 26530 71671.
