The lively, historic port of Saint-Malo has an exciting year-round calendar of festivals and events to tempt visitors. Much of the action takes place within the grey ramparts that encircle the old town, with sections dating back to the 12th century. Here, the statue of Jacques Cartier, the famous explorer who sailed from Saint-Malo in 1534 to claim and name Canada, gazes out to sea. For a peaceful stay with a warm welcome, modern-day explorers head outside the bustling walls to the stylish, contemporary Hôtel Mercure Saint Malo Balmoral ****.
