Hotel Eros ★★★★

Island tranquillity, beachside bliss, smoking volcanoes and the God of Love.

By Ella Klyachitsky, VeryChic correspondent
The Aeolian archipelago is scattered, remote and majestic, north of Sicily. Since antiquity, it has been linked to myths and fables … did Odysseus rest here? Ascribed to the wind god Aeolus, the islands possess a divine beauty. I couldn't help but feel a nervous excitement approaching Volcano Island by sea, its smouldering peak instilling a primordial respect. But our hotel was overseen by another, protective god. Hotel Eros **** has the beauty and charm one may expect of the God of Love.

  • Maria Tindara is the woman behind the famous food of this hidden restaurant. Far from the tourist centre of the island, it's an effort to get to, but worth it in terms of a memorable and authentic Italian meal. Traditional food without fanfare, made from superb local ingredients and crafted with immense experience make for a fabulous meal. Via Provinciale 38, 98055 Sicily, Italy.
  • Gelso is a pretty port on the south of the island that's worth heading to, in part for the journey through the island's picturesque scenery. There are some uncrowded beaches with an almost tropical feel, surrounded by little beach bars to keep you nourished.
  • Oasi della Salute Volcanic Mineral Pools is where to spend the day to be guaranteed a peaceful night! Flit between different pools and different hydrotherapy treatments and have tension that you didn't know you carried unwound. Via Lentia, 1, 98050 Sicily, Italy.
