Tired but happy you make your way back to the hotel. The peaks are luminous in the moonlight, and the only sound is the sliding of your skis. Arguably the most glamorous ski resort in the world, Courchevel is situated at one end of Les Trois Vallées which has over 600km of pistes with terrain to suit everyone from beginner to expert. Courchevel itself has 150km of Alpine ski runs with 58 lifts. There’s a ‘Zen’ area for beginners, 19 green runs, 35 blue, 34 red and 8 black. There are also 66km of maintained and marked cross country ski trails at high altitude and through the forest where you can enjoy being at one with nature. While you’re here you also have to try a torchlight descent; a truly magical experience. It’s not just about skiing and snowboarding though, the resort has plenty more to offer. Bring out your inner child by learning to drive a Sno-Cat, or take adrenaline- seeking to the next level with a tandem hang-gliding flight. If the weather is bad then make your way to the Forum Olympic ice rink to experience the joys of gliding across the ice.
Located right in the heart of this winter sports lover’s paradise, with direct access to the slopes of Courchevel 1850, is Le Chabichou. It blends beautifully into the snowy landscape, being painted white rather than having the usual wood-effect exterior. Within this elegant mountain chalet lies a restaurant with two notable awards, a fabulous spa and 41 bedrooms. The interiors are luxurious but not ostentatious; tactile fabrics, exposed stone and rough-hewn wood give a cosy and refined feel. Our room is like a traditional log cabin style but with a modern twist, and is blessed with gorgeous views over the landscape. Wrapped in robe and slippers, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind and is complete with a flat screen TV with satellite channels, minibar and of course room service. The Rochedys have created a retreat that’s chic but family orientated, and has everything you could need including extras like a ski shop, DVD library, and games room.
When you’re out on the slopes all day the muscles can take a bit of a pounding so it’s a treat to have the gorgeous Spa to look forward to. You’re spoilt for choice; there’s a multi-sensory musical pool section, and in addition to the steam room and sauna there’s a freezing cold polar bath, ice fountain and even a salt grotto. That’s without mentioning the hot tub, sensory rain trail and fitness room. Treat yourself to a Kos sea-salt body scrub or a Kos body wrap before enjoying the complimentary drink and piece of cake; now that’s my kind of spa experience. If the cake has whetted your appetite then you must take part in the Chabi-tea time, every day between 3pm and 6pm.
On the subject of food, this hotel really holds its own and the piste leading to the award-winning restaurant has even been nicknamed ‘Boulevard du Chabichou’. Michel Rochedy and Stephane Buron add a touch of originality and the exotic to traditional regional cuisine. You’ll sit down to dishes like Salmon tartar, smoked over beech wood with a herby Chantilly cream, or chocolate and salted caramel macaroons. The main restaurant is an elegant dining room furnished with pale wood, which also opens out onto a sun-soaked terrace. You can even request the table d’hôte in the kitchen so you can be in on the action when they are making your macaroons. The bistro, La Chabotte, was created with the concept of ‘bistronomie’ in mind: great food at affordable prices. It’s the setting for live music, cabaret and even magic shows, which goes to prove that a stay here really is every bit as magical as that first impression.
