A touch of glamour in the heart of old Porto

By Melissa Leighty, VeryChic correspondent
There is no denying that Porto enjoys the sweeter side of life. Nestled along the banks of the Douro River where it made its name, Porto is best known for the sweet vintage wine that is produced in the old port houses lining the riverbank. Yet, to know the city solely for its signature libation is to sell it short. Much more than the historical markers of its past, Porto is a city that yields up its varied and innumerable charms with ease and it didn’t take long before we settled into the beguiling rhythms of this sweet city and found ourselves at home in one of the most enchanting hotels in Porto.

Standing where the Baquet Theatre once stood, the Hotel Teatro is an intimate ode to its 150-year-old past. Designed with its origins in mind, the 71 room hotel is small enough to offer the contemporary boutique feel that we love while still keeping its history close to its heart. From the minute we stepped into this bohemian gem, we could see that the stage was set for an ovation-worthy stay.

Not surprising since the magical space made its on-screen debut in one of the Potter films! Enjoy the grand wood-panelled interior and two floors of books in several languages. The four-table coffee shop upstairs, where you can also find port and cigars, is one of the best-kept secrets in the city. R. das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto.
  • Fundação Serralves is the city’s stunning contemporary art museum which houses work by important Portuguese and international artists. Beginning with pop art and bringing visitors through to contemporary times, the museum is a well-curated example of what makes Porto so great. Take the quaint old city tram out to the museum, and while you’re there, take the time to visit the adjacent Art Deco villa and 18 hectare park.
