My sister and I took a standard twin room and treated the birthday girl to a deluxe room. We had requested to be close to each other, which the staff had kindly arranged for us. My sister and I were very happy to see ours; it satisfied a penchant we have for the rustic French farmhouse-chic, with exposed wooden beamed ceiling and understated elegance with whites and natural tones, and ubiquitous pine furnishings. We had a beautiful view of the garden which we could enjoy from our seating area, and spacious single beds. The room had plenty of natural light and a calm ambience. The bathroom was bright and large, predominantly in white with wood and marble features.
We had planned a trip to the spa to unwind from our travels, and went to knock on our mum's door, feeling a bit like young girls again. We had a peek at her room and saw in it the same elegant design as ours. The pool area is adorned with colourful and stylish artwork and beautiful mosaic patterns. After a swim we piled into the sauna to engage in some good old-fashioned sibling rivalry, seeing who could last the longest – it wasn't me! By now we were all thoroughly relaxed and starting to feel the early start catching up, it was time for a good glass of wine, dinner and bed.
The dining area was inviting and homely. Earthy yet bright colours and wood merge together in a way somehow only possible in France. The friendly waitress helped us to choose from the extensive wine list and as we let the deep aromatic red wine work its magic, the gentle classical music lulled us into a heady happiness. We ordered some quintessential French dishes and deserts and left happily satiated.
The next morning and we were back in the restaurant sampling the hot and cold buffet breakfast, all commenting how fortunate it was we had a lot of walking planned to compensate for the inevitable indulgence in food when you visit France. The selection was fresh and delicious, and the coffee was good too. We spent some time in one of the pretty outdoor spaces; a circular pergola in white canvas with wooden decking and chairs. Here we spread out our maps of the region and tourist guides and planned our day ahead. We agreed on a leisurely stroll around the medieval centre of Obernai, lunch in a bijou café somewhere, and then a vineyard and wine-tasting tour in the afternoon. The staff helped us to plan our itinerary and we set off to get our fill of those simple pleasures France does so well. Staying at the hotel La Cour d'Alsace **** was the perfect elegant setting for our laid-back sojourn in the enchanting region of Alsace.

BY PLANE
The closest airport is Strasbourg International Airport, around 55km from the hotel. This airport does not receive a huge number of international flights, so you may need to fly into other airports such as Stuttgart Airport (180km from the hotel) or Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (around 100 km away).
- From the UK: You can fly to Strasbourg from London Gatwick with EasyJet, or London Stansted with Ryanair. EasyJet fly to Basel from various other UK cities.
- From Ireland: Ryanair fly from Dublin to Basel.
- From Germany: Air Berlin and Germanwings fly to Stuttgart from all over Germany. You can also fly to Basel from various cities, most commonly with EasyJet.
- From the Netherlands: Air France fly from Amsterdam to Strasbourg.
- From Demark: Out of Copenhagen, EasyJet fly to Basel and SAS fly to Stuttgart.
- From Sweden, Norway and Finland: Direct flights are not available to any of the surrounding airports. Brussels Airlines operate indirect flights from Oslo and Stockholm, stopping in Brussels. Alternatively, fly to Brussels or Paris and look for trains to Strasbourg (find tickets on the Rail Europe website)
- From France: Between Air France, Hop! and Volotea, you can find flights to Strasbourg from most major cities.
HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL
From Strasbourg Airport to the hotel:
- By Taxi: The Strasbourg Airport being the closest, taking a taxi is an option. The trip will take about 20 minutes and coast between 35€ and 40€ (around £25-£29).
- By Train: from the airport, you can take the TER rail service from the Entzheim Aeroport station to the town of Obernai. The trip costs 4.40€ (around £3) and takes just 30 minutes. From the Obernai station it is a 10 minute walk to the hotel or a very short taxi ride.
- By Car: Turn right toward D221 and take it until it meets up with the D400. Merge onto D400 and take it until the A35. Take the exit onto A35 toward Saint-Dié/Colmar/Molsheim. Keep right at the fork to continue on A35/E25, follow signs for Saint-Dié-des-Vosges/Mulhouse/Colmar/Obernai. Take exit 11 toward Obernai. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto D426 and continue straight through 2 more roundabouts to stay on the D426. At the 4th roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Rue du Général Gouraud/D422 and continue on Rue du Général Gouraud as it turns into the D109. Turn left onto Rue de Gail. The hotel is located on the left down a narrow road between a yellow house and a house with a pale green ground floor and a light blue first floor. The hotel is also indicated by a large sign on the side of the yellow building.
Because of the distance between the hotel, the Stuttgart and Basel airports and public transportation, renting a car is the quickest and most cost effective way to arrive to the hotel. Having a car will also allow you to visit the region during your stay.
From Stuttgart Airport to the hotel:
- By Car:From the airport, follow signs for A8/Karlsruhe. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for A8 and merge onto A8. Then merge onto A5 and take exit 55-Offenburg. Keep right again at the fork, follow signs for Strasbourg and merge onto L98. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit and stay on L98 heading to Strasbourg. Continue onto N353 and take the exit toward Saint Dié/Strasbourg/Aéroport Entzheim. Merge onto N83 and take the exit toward Saint-Dié/Aéroport Entzheim and then merge onto A35. Keep right at the fork to continue on A35/E25, follow signs for Saint-Dié-des-Vosges/Mulhouse/Colmar/Obernai. Take exit 11 toward Obernai. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto D426 and continue straight through 2 more roundabouts to stay on the D426. At the 4th roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Rue du Général Gouraud/D422 and continue on Rue du Général Gouraud as it turns into the D109. Turn left onto Rue de Gail. From Basel Airport to the hotel:
- By Car: Take the A35 north in the direction of Strasbourg and take exit Nº12 for Obernai. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto D1422 and at the next roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Rue Principale/D422. At the following roundabout, take the 4th exit onto D426 and take the 2nd exit onto Rue de Bernardswiller/D109 at the next roundabout. Turn right onto Rue du Général Gouraud/D109 for 300 metres. The hotel is located on the right down a narrow road between a yellow house and a house with a pale green ground floor and a light blue first floor. The hotel is also indicated by a street sign of white writing on a dark red background.
