La Joliette is an old maritime neighbourhood in the second arrondissement of Marseille. It is the oldest part of one of the oldest cities in Europe. In fact, it was 600 BC when the Greeks arrived at what is now referred to as the Old Port, quickly setting up a trading post in what they recognised as an advantageous location. For thousands of years, it remained a vibrant fishing port, until the nineteenth century brought with it the huge ships of the industrial revolution and the onset of French colonialism, instigating its transformation into a dock. Nowadays, it is an attractive marina and a centre of cultural life in the city, filled with boutiques, bars and galleries.
Just a moment from the port, you’ll find the Best Western Plus La Joliette****. This lovely hotel occupies a quaint, nineteenth century building on a street lined with likeminded properties. Inside is decidedly contemporary, and rooms feel fresh and modern. You’ll be staying in either the Superior or Deluxe room. The former is spacious with an elegant, simple design and a few splashes of colour, whilst the latter, similarly designed, features a bathtub and additional sofa bed, suitable for children to sleep on. Bathroom amenities strongly evoke the history of the city with timeless fragrances, provided by Marseille-based L’Abeille. Founded in 1730, it is by far the oldest cosmetics company in the country - a country that is, of course, famous for its cosmetics.
The hotel boasts a fabulous heated indoor pool for you to relax in that’s encompassed by the building’s original stone walls. Not to mention, you can relax in the hammam or hit up the all-day gym. When you’re in need of a quick moment of relaxation, head to the bar and have the brilliant bartender serve up a tantalising cocktail. Take it out to the attractive patio and soak up the sun – this is the Mediterranean, after all! At the Best Western Plus La Joliette****, you’ll be the recipient of exceptional service at the historical heart of an exceptional city.
