Hotel de la Plage

Classic venue for a summer break

By Victoria Lomax, VeryChic correspondent
About 60 years ago a simple family hotel achieved lasting fame. As its name suggests, the Hotel de la Plage overlooks a lovely beach in Saint-Marc-sur-Mer in Western France. In 1951 it was chosen by Jacques Tati as the setting for a movie which has become one of the great classics of French film comedy. “Les Vacances de monsieur Hulot”, shot not in a studio but in and around the hotel itself, is a riot of adventures, both plausible and improbable, experienced by the hysterically funny M Hulot and his fellow holidaymakers. Since then the Hotel de la Plage has been acquired by Best Western and extensively renovated in 2008, but it retains the charm and spirit that Tati spotted and captured for generations of movie lovers.
