Contemporary luxury and design on a traditional Greek island

Exceptional
9.7 /10
By Jo Weston, VeryChic correspondent
Greek islands are ethereal places. Once you've set foot on them they remain a standard by which all other sun, sea and sand holidays are measured. My husband and I were heading to Greece again, as luckily there are so many islands to explore. We'd been recommended the Anemi Hotel **** in Folegandros by some friends who waxed lyrical about its marriage of traditional Cycladic architecture and contemporary design. We had to take them out to dinner when we got back to say thank you!

  • Spitiko, literally the home, is tucked away from the main tourist parts of the chora. As the name suggests, it's in a former house, and serves totally authentic 'mama' food. There are only a dozen or so tables set out under a big old tree, which is partly what creates the welcoming and intimate feel of the restaurant. You're likely to meet the whole family during the course of your meal! Chora, 84011, Folegandros, Greece. +30 22860 41235.
  • Sea U Dive Centre has great instructors who know how to create a fun day out on a boat, exploring under the waves. Whether you've never seen under the water or are a dab hand, you're bound to have a good day out. www.sea-u.com
  • The Ecological and Folklore Museum is a small but interesting museum offering a glimpse of life on the island in the 17th century. The guides are really enthusiastic and informative and it's worth the journey there for the scenery alone! Ano Meria, Folegandros, Greece.
  • Katergo Beach is accessible by boat, or intrepid hike. Boat trips leave from Karovastasis, very close to the hotel. Everyone who goes says it's the most beautiful beach on the island, with crystal clear waters and a magical atmosphere. But be prepared – part of its pristine charm means there's absolutely nothing there! Take a picnic and depending on the season, a sun umbrella.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • There are boats daily to and from Santorini, including a high speed one once a day which takes about an hour. Alternatively, if you fly to Athens, Piraeus is the port of departure to Folegandros. The service is quite frequent, either by ferry or high speed boat. The ferry takes about 6 hours, depending on the number of calls it makes to other islands on the way, while the high speed boat takes about 3.5 hours. The hotel is just a 2 minute drive or an 8 minute walk from the port.
