Fast forward 12 hours and we’re walking through the historic heart of the town, with its cobbled lanes, beautifully-preserved medieval houses, and enchanting canals. Our 17th century manor house, though lacking the characteristic, original brickwork of some of its neighbours, is a delightfully elegant and imposing building. Inside the Montanus, we are met with an immaculate marble entrance, with a pristine white lounge to our left and a lovely carved wooden desk to our right, where we are warmly welcomed.
The walk to our room takes us through a peaceful and pretty urban oasis, with water features and plenty of lush greenery. Once we get to the cottage annex, we discover a gorgeous old building. Our bedroom enjoys fantastic views over the gardens, and boasts chic design and a luxurious bathroom, for a soothing and cosy base in Bruges.
After a day’s sightseeing, we’ve worked up an appetite. Fortunately, we have a reservation at Den Heerd, the hotel’s restaurant where we enjoy 3 courses of culinary perfection. As morning comes, we return to the brilliant restaurant for the deluxe breakfast buffet – waffles with rich chocolate sauce are a particularly indulgent way to begin the day!

- Visit the Salvador Dalí Museum to see a great selection of his works and gain an insight into the surrealist master’s eccentric mind.
- If this gives you a taste for the unusual, head to Arthie’s for dinner, where the weird and wonderful décor could almost be something out of a Dalí painting.
- Shopping at Kathe Wohlfahrt, a specialty German Christmas shop selling all kinds of gifts, decorations and festive goodies. This is a great place to stock up on Christmas shopping in winter, or to get yourself in the festive spirit nice and early in summer. There are two in town, with one just around the corner from the hotel at 12 Walplein.
- If you are in Bruges long enough to be able to spare a day out of the city, head to Flanders Fields for a haunting but fascinating day trip. You can, of course, explore under your own devices, but for insightful tours we recommend Quasimodo.

BY PLANE
Brussels National Airport (BRU) is the main airport, located around 12 km / 7.5 mi northeast of Brussels centre, while Brussels-South Charleroi Airport (CRL) is located near Charleroi, around 46 km / 29 mi south of Brussels.
Brussels National receives flights from many major cities across Europe, including the UK. Meanwhile, low-cost airlines in particular operate to Brussels-South Charleroi Airport.
FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL
From Brussels National Airport:
• Transfer: a transfer service to and from Brussels Airport is available at a rate of 175€ each way on request and with confirmation from the hotel
• Taxi: licensed taxis can by recognised by the blue and yellow emblem and should take around 20-30 minutes to reach the city centre.
• Train: an airport express train operates to the city centre. From there take the train in the direction of Oostende or Blankenberge to the hotel.From Brussels-South Charleroi Airport:
• Taxi: taxis should offer a fixed price to Brussels city centre, taking about 1 hour, and may be cost-efficient if shared between four passengers.
• Bus: shuttle buses run once an hour every day to Brussels-Midi station and take about 45 minutes. From there, walk to the Brussels South train station and take the train to Brugge, a 17 minute walk from the hotel.
• Car: Follow signs onto the E42 then E420/A54 to Brussels, then merging onto the A7. Take the exit for the RO Ouest. Finally, take exit 17 for Brussels-Centre.
