If you haven’t yet picked your next holiday destination, but you know that it needs to have sunshine, sea and sandy beaches - fly off to Mykonos, the star of the Cyclades. Since the 50s, this island has been attracting a crowd of international jet setters, wealthy Athenians, backpackers and world travellers on the hunt for the same vision of perfection: a magnificent and mythical island that sparkles day and night. On one of the island’s most beautiful bays, you’ll find the Mykonos Blu Grecotel Exclusive Resort. Tempted?
What do Johnny Depp, Giorgio Armani and Brigitte Bardot have in common? They all fell under the spell of Mykonos, the island that embodies the beauty of the Greek islands. Little cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, windmills: every scene is worthy of a postcard. Add dream-worthy beaches, crystal-clear waters and a gentle breeze to temper the warmth of the sun, and you have your ideal holiday. Coming to Mykonos already promises an exceptional holiday, but setting down your bags at the peaceful Mykonos Blu Grecotel Exclusive Resort means enjoying the best of the best.
I’ve been coming to Mykonos for twenty years. I love this magical and mythical Greek island. With its ideal location on the hillside, overlooking Psarou beach, the Mykonos Blu is one of the island’s emblematic hotels. Designed in the typical Cyclades architectural style, its whitewashed buildings are like giant sugar cubes on the coast and its bungalows unfold onto terraces, scattered in luscious gardens. Here, all is calm: the atmosphere is peaceful, unlike the bustle of Mykonos centre.
In the bedrooms, designed according to the principles of Feng Shui, you will enjoy a wonderful view over the Aegean Sea. Immaculate, minimalist and painted in white and blue in the purest Greek island style, you just have to walk out onto the terrace to find a private swimming pool for the Junior Villas. All this is hard to leave, except for my favourite holiday activity: lounging in the sun. For this, you can go from the sublime infinity pool to the hotel’s private beach. There, you can enjoy a healthy meal or drink a cocktail at the Hello Beach Bar. There is also a tranquil atmosphere at the spa, where, at the end of the day, you can treat yourself to a sauna or perhaps even an expert massage.
But if you do feel like going out, you can hop on a scooter and go shopping in Chora, enjoy a meal in the Little Venice district, or head for the island’s other beaches. I loved returning to the calm and tranquillity of the Mykonos Blu in the evening, where, at sunset, I savoured an ouzo on the rooftop bar. With the sea as a backdrop, I watched the sun go down and dreamt of supper. There is a choice of three restaurants that showcase Mediterranean cuisine, including a delicious sushi bar.
On retiring to my room, I’d dream of the following day…perhaps a sailing trip arranged by the hotel where you can watch the sunset with a glass of champagne… paradise.
