By Jo Weston, VeryChic correspondent

My sister is so lucky! Her son is studying Spanish at university and recently heard that his Erasmus year was to be in the Universitat de Barcelona. She had barely got off the phone from hearing the good news before she was looking at flights, deciding that he needed a trip to ‘acclimatise’. She wanted an upmarket, comfortable and central base from which to explore the sights. When she showed me Villa Emilia **** and asked me to come too, what else could I say but yes?

Chic idea: to make the most of your time in Barcelona, book your tickets in advance for a wide range of activities, here.

Barcelona

Spain

The Villa Emilia is just outside Barcelona’s historic city centre, on the left side of the Eixample district, about half way between the Plaça Catalunya and the Plaça Espanya.

BY PLANE

  • Barcelona is served mainly by Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), found just 12 km (7.5 mi) southwest of the city centre.

The airport is well served by flights from capitals and large cities all across Europe. While many airlines operate to and from Barcelona-El Prat, it acts notably as a main base for Vueling, and as a hub for Iberia, Air Europa, Ryanair, and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

We recommend flying to Barcelona-El Prat Airport as it is much closer and more convenient for reaching the city centre. However, low-cost airlines (most notably Ryanair) fly from a number of European destinations to Girona–Costa Brava Airport (GRO), located around 100km north of Barcelona. Some low-cost airlines, mostly from the UK and Ireland, also fly to Reus Airport (REU), located around 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Barcelona.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

  • From Barcelona-El Prat:
    - By taxi: It will take around 20 minutes to reach the city centre and costs about €25 from T2 & €30 from T1 (with surcharges for luggage). Be sure to take an official, black and yellow, taxi.

    - By train: A quick and cheap way of getting to/from the airport. Trains run regularly and take around 25 minutes. A single airport ticket costs around 4€.
A cost-efficient option, especially if you plan on using public transport during your stay, is the T10 ticket. At just under €10, it is valid for 10 journeys (including the airport zone). It has no expiry date and can be shared by more than one person at a time. It is also valid on buses & trams.
Get off at Sants, from there take the metro, line 3 (green) two stops down to Plaça Espanya.

    - By bus: Aerobus run express buses between the airport and city centre. Tickets are €5.90 for a single and €10.20 return. Get off at Plaça Espanya. From here it is less than 10 minutes’ walk.
There are two night buses (NitBus), the N17 from Terminal 1 and the N16 from Terminal 2. A single ticket is €2.15. You can also use the T10 on this bus. Get off at Gran Via – Viladomat, then turn left onto Carrer Calabria.

    From Girona–Costa Brava:
    - By bus: Barcelona Bus, run by Sagalés, offers a convenient route to Barcelona city centre, and coincides with Ryanair flight times. A return ticket costs €25 and can be purchased from the Sagalés booth at the airport. The bus terminates at Barcelona Nord bus station. From there take the metro at Arc de Triomf (the red line, L1) for 5 stops to Rocafort. From there, take a left up Carrer Calabria.

METRO

  • The closest metro stop is Rocafort, served by line 1 (red). From there, walk left up Carrer de Calabria.
