After an unusually gruelling season at work, my husband and I felt we deserved a proper holiday. Not that there’s anything improper about our occasional city breaks or Mediterranean sunspots, but this time we were hoping for somewhere literally away from it all and… well… paradise. That’s a tall order but not too much to ask, is it? We feared it might have been, but then a friend told us about Constance Lemuria ***** in the Seychelles and unbelievably, there it was. Simply paradise!

The Seychelles, those tiny dots of islands out in the Indian Ocean lying somewhere between the African coast and the tip of India, really do epitomise paradise. The white sands and turquoise water blending into the deep azure blue that is viscerally and elementally satisfying.

A mere five minutes from Praslin airport and we were there. The hotel is spread along three private beaches, with the main building nestled into the dense vegetation on the hillside. There is water everywhere, with pretty pools which seem carved by nature from the surrounding rocks and the swimming pool is on three levels, flowing from the hotel to the sea.

After a friendly greeting and a welcome drink, we made our way to our villa, which looked like a little rustic pagoda with its two-tier thatched roof. Inside it was surprisingly large. The lounge was furnished with modern pieces which were softened with bright silk fabrics. It opened onto a terrace with a curved pool surrounded by rocks and vegetation. We had a lovely large bedroom, and we loved the heady sweet scent of the frangipani flowers scattered on the towels in our super-size bathroom.

We agreed we had definitely arrived in paradise, and went to explore a little further. On one of the beaches, the one we immediately thought of as ‘ours’ because it was deserted and right in front of our villa.

The only possible downside of paradise would be if it were predictable. But not here! We gasped with astonishment and delight at the sight of a dining table laid for two perched out on a piece of decking in the rocks overlooking a lonely expanse of water. With the bare lamp-illuminated rocks behind you for walls, and the rocks falling away to the deep blue waters in front, we immediately decided that was to be the venue for our last evening.

And our last evening came all too soon. After endless days in the pools or in the sea, dinner in the hotel’s Legend Restaurant, or relaxing in the spa where each white-towelled treatment bench is adorned with a single scarlet hibiscus, our days in paradise came to a close. We took home with us happy memories of a unique experience, and a new definition of a proper holiday: one that includes the Constance Lemuria!

Vallée de Mai National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this park protects an ancient forest which has around 4,000 giant coco de mer fruit palms which are unique to the Seychelles and well as lots of other flora and fauna including the national bird of the Seychelles, the black parrot. You can follow the marked nature trail which takes between one and two hours depending on the route.

The Black Parrot Suite Souvenir Shop. There are some nice galleries and shops to explore, some of them like this one in local hotels. However you need to be aware that there are restrictions on taking some items, such as the nut of the coco de mer palm, out of the islands.

Gelateria de Luca. For the perfect ice cream in paradise, you have to try the coppa tropicale at this little café/restaurant in Anse Volbert. Under 20 minutes’ drive from the hotel, the route, which takes you along the coast and then through the Praslin National Park, is almost as awesome as the ice cream when you arrive!

Cousin Island. About two kilometres from Praslin Island, this is a nature reserve created primarily for the Seychelles warbler and hawksbill turtle. You can also spot the Seychelles magpie robin, the Seychelles brush warbler, the Seychelles turtledove, and the wedge-tailed shearwater here. The reserve includes breeding grounds for lesser noddies, fairy terns, and tropicbirds.

Praslin Island Airport (PRI) is the nearest airport to the hotel, however only receives flights from the main international airport in the Seychelles on the island of Mahé, you will first need to fly there, see below.

Seychelles International Airport (SEZ), also known locally as L'Aéroport de la Pointe Larue, is the international airport serving the Seychelles Islands. It is found on the island of Mahé, 11 km / 6.8 mi southeast of the capital city, Victoria.

The airport is the home base and the head office of Air Seychelles, which operate a couple of direct international flights from Europe, including Paris and Düsseldorf. Condor also operate direct flights from Frankfurt. If flying from the UK or elsewhere in Europe, we recommend flying via one of the aformentioned cities or via Dubai or Abu Dhabi with Emirates or Etihad Airways.

Air Seychelles operate direct flights from Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) to Praslin Island Airport (PRI).
