Hôtel Liberata ★★★★

Be a free spirit at this magical, Art Nouveau beachside hotel

By Fiona Tindale, VeryChic correspondent
“Get away from here before you’re completely bewitched and enslaved” Dorothy Carrington was told in Granite Island when she came to Corsica. Too late! It turned out Corsica’s spell had worked its magic on this author and she was so enchanted by its beauty, she never wanted to leave the island again. Around the area of L’Île Rousse there are many references to freedom as Pasquale Paoli freed Corsica from Genoese rule and founded the island in 1758. Hotel Liberata, from the Latin word liberatum meaning freedom, is no exception and will certainly set your spirits free as you watch the sun set over the rust-red rocks jutting out into the ocean. But beware, this island may work its magic on you too and you may become so captivated by its beauty that you never want to go home.

BY PLANE

  • The closest airport to the hotel is Calvi-Sainte-Catherine Airport which is mainly served by Air France, connecting the area with Paris-Orly, Nice, Lille, Marseille and Perpignan. Air Berlin flies from Düsseldorf, and the rest of the flights to the airport are only seasonal. Because of this, we recommend flying through Paris-Orly, or even Nice Airport.

Flights to Nice are listed below:
    - From the UK: Direct flights from London are operated by British Airways, and low-cost airlines EasyJet and Norwegian. Direct flights from other major cities such as Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Belfast are offered by either Easyjet or Monarch .

    - From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, you can find direct flights offered by Aer Lingus and low-cost Ryanair; the same airlines offer flights from some other cities including Cork and Shannon.

    - From Germany: The airlines Easyjet and Germanwings provide direct flights from Berlin and Hamburg. Germanwings and Lufthansa offer direct flights from Dusseldorf, while Lufthansa also offers direct flights from Frankfurt and Munich.

    - From the Netherlands: Departing from Amsterdam, KLM, Air France and Transavia all provide direct flights. Transavia also provide direct flights from both Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

    - From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: SAS and Norwegian operate direct flights from Stockholm in Sweden, Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen in Denmark. Finnair and Norwegian fly direct from Helsinki, Finland.

    - From France: Both Air France and Easyjet provide direct flights from most major cities including: Paris, Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux and Toulouse. Air France also operates flights from Strasbourg.

TRANSFER FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • - By car from Calvi Airport: The journey takes around 30 minutes. Leaving the arrivals terminal, turn right onto Route de l’Aéroport D81. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto N197 toward Île Rousse. Stay on that road for a good 25 minutes, and on Avenue Paul Doumer, right after a gas station, take a left onto Boulevard Charles-Marie Savelli, the hotel will be on your right.

    - By car from Nice Airport: This 6 and a half hour journey requires a car and includes a ferry ride. From the airport, follow signs to Nice centre. This will lead you to get on Boulevard René Cassin, continuing onto Voie Pierre Mathis. Follow that road for about 10 minutes, then turn right onto Avenue Gallieni (toward Promenade des anglais). Turn left onto Rue Barla, then right onto Rue Arson, and continue until you reach Port de Nice. From there on, take a ferry to Île Rousse – the sailing will last around 6 hours. From the Port, follow the coast line heading south east on Avenue David Dary and Boulevard Charles-Marie Savelli; the hotel will be on your right.
