By Jo Weston, VeryChic correspondent
My nephew and his beautiful French partner decided they were going to get married near her home village of Monteils in the Aveyron valley. ‘Where?’ asked those of us not so familiar with the region. It didn’t really matter; we would be there for the big day, come what may. What a delightful surprise awaited us! The Château de Longcol **** was the prettiest place imaginable, in the loveliest valley possible, and the food makes it worthy of being the star attraction for any lover of gastronomy in France.

  • Belcastel. In less than one hour in the car you can visit one of the ‘most beautiful villages of France’. The medieval village of Belcastel has cobbled streets and stone-tiled houses. Most of the village and the Castle are clustered on the north bank of the Aveyron River. Wonderful atmosphere and fabulous photo opportunities!
  • Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Another perfectly picturesque village, only a 20-minute car journey through some gorgeous countryside. The square of the village, the Place Notre-Dame, is a perfect bastide town centre, with intact arcades around the square and medieval houses above them.
  • While in Villefrance-de-Rouergue, don’t miss a visit to the Café des Arcades, set in the middle of the medieval arches typical of the village. Great coffee and pastries, friendly and welcoming staff, and no other tourists when we were there! (+33) 565 452 242 – 4 Arc Reynies 12200 Villefranche-de-Rouergue
