I’m somewhat of a regular to the Thai shores, but just when I thought I had seen it all, a chance ferry ride took me to the island of Koh Lanta, home of the Klong Dao Beach and the Twin Lotus Resort & Spa *****. As I swayed to the rocking of the boat, I had the sweet sensation that I was in for something special…
I love everything about Thailand – its stunning natural beauty, cultural heritage, hospitality, and delicious cuisine. However, Koh Lanta proved to be the hidden gem I had always been dreaming of. Located on the west coast of the Andaman Sea between Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands, it’s a small island featuring nine beaches along its western coast. The area is secluded and natural, with a completely Zen feel. For the Thai people, Koh Lanta is the “place where time stands still.” Being here now, I understand exactly what they mean.
The hotel I chose was the Twin Lotus Resort & Spa *****. The lotus is the symbol of spiritual perfection, and it seems the hotel has done all it can to make this metaphor a reality. It features a mix of newly-renovated contemporary and traditional architecture, luxurious gardens, sprawling palm and coconut trees, a spectacular pool, and a prime location with a two-mile long white sand beach facing the beautiful Andaman Ocean. I knew I was in for a relaxing time when I caught a glimpse of my view of the hotel’s lush gardens from my deluxe villa. . Modern and minimal, it boasted a huge king-size bed, brand new bathroom, and peaceful private terrace as well as an array of modern amenities.
Two fabulous swimming pools beckon for moments of refreshing fun or intimate reflection while pondering the sunset. Two restaurants are on hand, the Bua Fah Restaurant and the Barracuda Beach Bar and Restaurant, providing typical and novel Thai flavours you won’t want to miss. In the morning, a breakfast buffet fit for royalty awaits, featuring homemade pancakes and exotic fruit juices. The Bua Luang Spa and Wellness Centre is just what the body craves after a day of exploring the island; unwind during a massage in one of the site’s nine treatment rooms, and then relax in the oversized hot tub and open-air pagoda.
Once you’ve made your way around the hotel, be sure to go out and see Koh Lanta. The best way to get around is by scooter, which can be rented in several locations on the island. Take your time and enjoy the island’s lush vegetation, stopping along the way for some fresh seafood in one of the numerous huts along the beach or for some shopping in the colourful market stalls. Whatever your plan, you’ll be thrilled knowing you get to return to the Twin Lotus Resort & Spa *****, a one-of-a-kind resort experience on the most uncommon of tropical islands.
