The first thing that struck me upon arrival was that the colours here seemed so vivid: the blue from the ocean, the crashing white waves, the sparkling golden sand… not to mention the breathtaking plethora of colours at sunset. To top it off, the image of the Oitavos dunes plunging into the wild Atlantic Ocean is a sight to behold.
The hotel itself is modern and discrete at first glance and an architectural delight upon closer inspection. Many of the walls are transparent, allowing for maximum light to penetrate (particularly in the spa!). Yet the hotel retains a warm and inviting atmosphere, perhaps helped by the friendly staff. There are two things in my mind that separate the good from the great: the bed and the bathroom. The Oitavos gets a gold star for both: big luxurious beds with a fantastic view and truly spacious bathrooms with superb complimentary products so you can fully enjoy your stay.
One of the main attractions in this destination is golf. Portugal has made a name for itself as the golfing capital of Southern Europe and the Oitavos hotel offers access to one of the best circuits in the country – the views alone make for an unforgettable few hours! Golf isn’t the only activity on offer however: horse-riding, trekking, and surfing are all on the menu either in Cascais or within driving distance. For those looking for a more relaxing experience, the hotel’s avant-garde spa has everything you need to really get into the holiday spirit and forget any worries from back home.
For culture vultures, there is no better place to start than Portugal’s capital – Lisbon! Just a thirty-minute drive away, discover world-class museums, art galleries and a rich history. Today it’s one of southern Europe’s most multicultural cities. Meanwhile, the Atlantic provides local restaurants with a source of delicious, fresh seafood – be sure to try Oitavos’ award-winning restaurant Verbasco. Whether it’s lobster, mussels, clams or the Portuguese favourite bacalao (cod), you won’t be disappointed! The hotel’s breakfasts are also superb, offering a large selection of fruit and pastries to give you plenty of energy for the day ahead.
Unique scenery, world-class service, spectacular cuisine and a range of activities to satisfy the whole family, Portugal has won me over. If you’re looking for a first taste of this beautiful country, follow VeryChic’s advice and check-in to the Oitavos hotel!
