The House Hotel Vault Karakoy ★★★★★

A worthy hotel for one of Istanbul’s hippest neighbourhoods.

By Esme Fox, VeryChic correspondent
Guidebook publisher Lonely Planet describes Istanbul as the ‘World’s Hippest City’ and we can definitely see why. The Turkish metropolis is on the tip of everyone’s tongues right now and is the European city break that everyone wants to take. Straddling the divides between East and West, Istanbul is a fascinating blend where ancient mosques, hammams and magical bazaars stand alongside fashion boutiques, modern architecture and a thriving café and bar scene. The city has everything you could want for the perfect city break. While you may not be able to stay in the architecturally stunning Topkapi Palace or the famous Hagia Sophia though, you’ll find that The House Hotel Vault Karakoy ***** is the next best thing.

The House Hotel Vault Karakoy ***** sits in the Karakoy district, on the European side of the richly historical city of Istanbul. Many attractions are found nearby such as the Galata Tower, Spice Market, the Suleymaniye Mosque, and the wall of Constantinople.

BY PLANE

  • Istanbul currently has two airports: Ataturk Airport on the European side and the newer Sabiha Gokcen Airport, on the Asian side. We recommend choosing a flight to Ataturk Airport, which is a little closer to the hotel.

Atakurk Airport (20 km) is the closest well served intnernational airport, located 45 minutes drive south-west of the hotel. It receives flights from many capitals and major cities across Europe.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • Note, get some Turkish Lira before leaving the airport as the buses etc. rarely accept cards.

    From Ataturk Airport:
    - By taxi: It takes around 30-60 minutes to get to the hotel, and should cost around 30-60 Turkish Lira (around 10-20€).

    - By public transport: The bus service, Havatas, departs every 30 minutes and costs 10 Turkish Lira (around 3.50€) per person. Departures from the airport to Taksim (on the European side of the city) run from 4am to 1am. Once in Taksim, it is a short taxi ride minutes to the hotel by taxi; alternatively, take the metro M2 to Sishan from which it is 10 minutes by foot – walk down to the roundabout, take the second left down Okcu Musa and follow this road straight on to Bankalar Cd, the hotel will be on the left.

    From Sabiha Gokcen Airport:
    - By taxi: It takes around 55-90 minutes to get to the hotel, and should cost around 40-70 Turkish Lira (around 15-25€).

    - By public transport: Similarly, Havatas run buses every 30 minutes (between 4 am to 1 am) from the airport to Taksim. Tickets cost 13 Turkish Lira (around 4.50€) per person.

BY TRAIN

  • Istanbul is well connected by train, with trains to Istanbul departing from all major cities across Europe and Asia. Trains from Europe arrive at Sirkeci (note that InterRail tickets are valid in Istanbul but only on the European side and not in the Asian region).

BY BOAT

  • It is also possible to make the trip to Istanbul by sea. Arrivals and departures by ferry and cruise ship etc. take place in the Port of Karaköy where there are many international connections. The Karaköy district itself is a major transport hub, commercial district and touristic area.

BY CAR

  • The E-80, E-90 and Trans-European Network (TEN) are the three main roads that connect Turkey with the capitals of Europe. The E-80 is the main road, which goes from the Turkish border in Edirne to Istanbul and Ankara.

Even though it is possible to enter the city by car, it is not recommended as traffic is incredibly dense.
