Walking hand- in-hand through the Jardin du Luxembourg, then sipping a café crème and savouring a pretty pastel macaroon in a chic café before returning to your pied-à-terre… the Radisson Blu Champs-Elysees ****. End the day with cocktails and a romantic dinner à deux on your balcony, against the stunning night-time backdrop of the Arc de Triomphe.
Transforming the former headquarters of Louis Vuitton into a luxury hotel was a gamble that paid off and resulted in the Radisson Blu Champs Elysées ****. Housed in a majestic Haussmann building, it is just 200 m from the Arc de Triomphe and bang in the centre of the city’s ‘golden triangle’: an area bounded by the boulevards of the Champs-Elysées, George V and Montaigne. The hotel’s doors open onto two kilometres of chic shops and restaurants offering all the glamour, romance, and entertainment you could wish for in the City of Light.
Those who believe that Parisians never smile will be pleasantly surprised here – the welcome is discreet yet warm. The Radisson Blu is a contemporary hotel with an elegant atmosphere and everything you would expect from a four-star establishment. It has 45 soundproofed rooms; ours is luxurious with wooden floors, stylish furnishings and original artwork. A flat screen TV with satellite channels, Wi-Fi and facilities to make that morning cup of coffee, or afternoon cup of tea – perhaps accompanied by that most Parisian of treats, a macaroon – to complete the picture. Request a room with a balcony and wake up to a view of one of the most iconic images of Paris; the Arc de Triomphe.
As lovely as the room – and the view – undoubtedly are, that’s not why you come to Paris. The Louis Vuitton shop is just four hundred metres from the hotel, closely followed by Nespresso, Abercrombie & Fitch and Agatha. If shopping is not your thing then a few minutes’ walk will take you to George V Metro station and from there the rest of Paris will open up to you. If you are a first-time visitor to the city (what took you so long?) then you will probably have the Eiffel tower, the Louvre, the Sacré-Coeur and Notre Dame Cathedral on your list. Those who have returned to Paris under the influence of a spell cast on a previous occasion will be keen to find new hidden gems, or to return to old favourites like the atmospheric Père Lachaise cemetery, Canal St Martin or the Rodin Museum.
Return to the hotel late afternoon and sink into a seat beside the crackling fireplace in the Bar Lounge, a perfect place to enjoy a steaming cafe crème, frosted cocktail or a full-bodied red. In the evening the hotel’s restaurant ‘La Place’ offers an impressive menu using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Enjoy some elegant French cuisine before setting off to explore the charms of the Golden Triangle by night. The dark streets are beautifully illuminated; Parisians are heading out to dinner and theatres down the Champs-Elysées are getting ready to welcome their audiences. If you’re going further afield and don’t fancy facing the crowds on the Metro, then have the concierge order you a taxi or even a limo for a special occasion. BY PLANE
Paris has three main airports: Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly along with the low-cost airport Paris Beauvais, located a little further out of the city.
- From the UK: British Airways, Air France, CityJet and EasyJet all operate direct flights out of London. EasyJet also fly direct from Bristol, Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow while Ryanair fly direct from Manchester and Flybe from Birmingham.
- From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, direct flights are operated by Aer Lingus, Air France and Ryanair. Aer Lingus also fly from Cork, while Ryanair also fly direct from Shannon.
- From Germany: Airlines flying direct from Berlin include: Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Air France, EasyJet and Germanwings. Air France and Germanwings also fly direct from Hamburg and Dusseldorf while Lufthansa also fly direct out of Frankfurt and Munich.
- From the Netherlands: Air France and KLM both provide direct flights out of Amsterdam.
- From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: SAS, Air France, KLM and Norwegian all fly direct from Stockholm in Sweden, Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen in Denmark. Low-cost airline Ryanair also fly out of Stockholm and Oslo while low-cost Easyjet also fly from Copenhagen. Finnair and Norwegian fly direct from Helsinki, Finland.
- From France: Air France operate shuttle flights from most major cities to Paris, including: Strasbourg, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Biarritz, Marseille and Nice.
HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL
From Paris Charles de Gaulle airport:
- By taxi: They are easily found outside each terminal, make sure to take an officially licensed taxi from the taxi rank. Fares vary considerably depending on traffic, but expect to pay anywhere between 50€ to 65€ (around £37 -£47).
- By train: This is generally the most cost-efficient method. The airport is connected to the city via Line B of the RER; take the train to Châtelet Les Halles, and switch to the metro system, taking line M1 (yellow) for 8 stops to Charles de Gaulle - Etoile. Tickets are 9,75€ or 6,85€ (between £7 - £6) for children (ages 4- 9).
- By Bus: The Roissybus runs directly to Opéra in central Paris, tickets cost around 10€ (around £7). Once at Opéra either take a taxi, metro or RER to the hotel. Travelling by RER you will need line A from the Opéra station, getting off at Charles de Gaulle - Etoile.
Alternatively, Cars Air France run buses directly to Arc de Triomphe/ Charles de Gaulle - Etoile. However these are far more expensive, at around 20€ (around £17) per person.
From Paris Orly airport:
- By taxi: They are easily found outside each terminal, make sure to take an officially licensed taxi from the taxi rank. Fares vary considerably depending on traffic, but expect to pay anywhere between 30€ to 40€ (around £20 - £29).
- By train: The airport is connected to RER line B via the bus service ORLYVAL. The bus will drop you off at the RER station Anthony. You can take the RER to Châtelet Les Halles, switch to the metro, and take line M1 (yellow) for 7 stops to Charles de Gaulle - Etoile. The combined journey costs around 11.65€ and 5.80€ (between £8 - £4) for children (ages 4 - 10).
From Paris-Beauvais airport:
- By train: Take a taxi (around 11€/£8) or shuttle bus (around 4€/£3 per person) to Beauvais station, from there take the TER line 19 to Paris Gare du Nord. Then take the RER line B to Châtelet Les Halles followed by metro line M1 (yellow) to Charles de Gaulle - Etoile.
- By bus: There is a shuttle bus operating between the airport and Porte Maillot in the city centre. From there take the metro line M1 (yellow) for 3 stops to Charles de Gaulle - Etoile.
From the Charles de Gaulle - Etoile stop walk down Avenue Marceau until you find the hotel on your left.
BY TRAIN
Most international trains arrive at either Paris Gare du Nord or Paris de l’Est. From Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est, take the M4 in the direction of Mairie de Montrouge. Get off at the Châtelet stop and switch to the M1. Take the M1 in the direction of La Défence and get off at the Charles de Gaulle - Etoile stop. From this metro stop it is just a 2 minute walk down Avenue Marceau.
From the UK: The train company Eurostar operate trains from London St. Pancras International train station to Paris Gare du Nord.
From Germany: Trains can terminate at either Paris Gare du Nord or Paris de l’Est. Direct trains can be found from several major cities including Frankfurt, Cologne and Dusseldorf. High-speed train company Thalys operate fast trains from Dusseldorf and Cologne.
From the Netherlands: High-speed train company Thalys, also run direct trains from Amsterdam and Rotterdam, also to Paris Gare du Nord.
From France: The French TGV operate fast trains from all over France.
BY METRO
The nearest metro is Charles de Gaulle - Etoile served by line M1 (yellow), M2 (blue), M6 (green) as well as the RER A. It is a 2 minute walk straight down Avenue Marceau. The hotel is at number 78 bis.
