Audacity, Seduction, Character, Theatricality
The Hotel Édouard 7 claims to have based its entire concept on these four key words, these most un-British traits which were inspired by the personality of Edward VII. In fact, when you examine his character, his affairs and his legendary style, it is hard to believe that ‘Bertie’ was British at all – he seems much more suited to the French stereotypes and way of life. Perhaps this was why he spent so much time across the channel, relaxing in Biarritz or mixing with Paris’s high society, based in the hotel which would go on to become the Édouard 7. One could not dispute that he could be summed up by the words ‘audacity, seduction, character and theatricality’, nor that these are all superbly mirrored by this absolute gem of a hotel.
Audacity – because, like the eponymous monarch, the Hotel Édouard 7 dares to be different. It ingeniously blends two styles, with spectacular results. Who knew that the chic and glamorous Parisian character would form such a perfect marriage with some typical, eighteenth century, English elegance? The simple sophistication and exquisitely designed furnishings, combining the best of the classic and the contemporary, make the hotel warm and inviting, from the moment you first enter the lobby. Even the cuisine is audacious and inventive – Rémy Fourmeaux’s menus consist of fresh, seasonal produce being used in creative and delicious ways, with a quirky and cheeky presentation reflecting the character of the man after whom the E7 restaurant is named.
Seduction – because this one of the main clichés of the City of Love, and the Édouard 7 is the perfect place to seduce and be seduced. It is an unbelievably romantic retreat – its stylish rooms are spacious and relaxing, with plush, comfortable beds and the very best luxurious facilities, while many boast balconies overlooking the famous Avenue de l’Opéra, a romantic spot to watch the world go by. Located just a stone’s throw away from many of the Ville-Lumière’s most iconic sights, it is also a brilliant spot to allow yourself to be seduced by the city itself. Within walking distance, you can indulge in some window shopping in the haute couture boutiques of the nearby Rue Saint Honoré, wander along the Champs-Elysées, or admire the artwork of the Louvre, all of which are sure to make you fall in love with the French capital.
Character – because this hotel has its own personality, just as distinctive and unique as Edward’s. The inventive decoration really makes an impression on every guest, transporting you back to the Belle Époque when the king himself used to walk these halls, or evoking images of contemporary Paris, with all its fashion and glamour. Just as Bertie’s bubbly personality ensured that he was always entertaining, there is never a dull moment in this quirky yet classic hotel. Whether enjoying one of the creative options on the tailor-made cocktail menu in the classy surroundings of the E7 bar, making the most of the massage service or fitness room, or just taking a moment to enjoy the hotel’s unspoilt views, you are sure to never be bored inside the Édouard 7.
Theatricality – because a stay here is a real event, as absorbing as the most dramatic performance at the nearby Palais Garnier. With its location just down the road from the emblematic opera house, there is of course a literal element of theatricality. There are few more sophisticated or enjoyable ways to spend an evening than to wander down the road on a balmy evening to witness a show at the great theatre. But there is also a more metaphorical side to the Édouard 7’s theatricality. Whether it is enjoying the spectacle of watching the beautiful people amble by on the chic Avenue de l’Opéra from the vantage point of your room’s balcony, or the performance of the staff as they diligently do everything they can to ensure you a most pleasant stay, there is always a touch of drama about the hotel.
Known as ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Uncle of Europe’, Edward VII enjoyed a reputation just as favourable abroad as at home. This was thanks in no small part to his charm and warm personality, two things which are also typical of the Édouard 7. A hotel with a character just as remarkable as its most famous guest, with food fit for a king, and with all the lavish, luxurious touches of a royal palace, it would certainly be well equipped to welcome him back. What’s more, I have no doubt that it will soon be just as fondly regarded as Paris’s favourite adopted son!
