Palermo in north-western Sicily is located next to the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Sicily’s tourist capital, it boasts a vast array of gastronomical delights and cultural offerings, including the theatre and opera. Its magnificent Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque churches and palaces make it a one-of-a-kind holiday destination. Experience Italy’s dolce vita while on the town or relaxing in a designer room at the centrally-located Hotel Plaza Opéra **** for an authentic VeryChic experience.
For this amateur to the opera, a trip to Palermo in Italy to explore some of the music on offer included a stay at the Hotel Plaza Opéra ****.
Running into a good friend of mine from university turned out to be a chance encounter. I remember her being quite musical while in school, so wasn’t surprised to hear she had become a violinist. She was talking about a stint she had for an opera in Palermo, and wondered if I might be interested in coming to hear her play. My first reaction was resistance (the path always more easily taken), but some cajoling on her part convinced me I could use a good dose of culture.
Plane tickets in hand, I made my maiden voyage to Sicily in Italy where, to get into the spirit, I booked a room at the Hotel Plaza Opéra ****. My first impression of Palermo was despairing, at best. The noise! The heat! The congestion! But as my cab made its way to the hotel, I couldn’t help but wind down as I found what can be described as nothing less than an oasis of peace.
With some limited experience in architecture, I marvelled at the design on display. Chic, geometric shapes in eye-stopping colours. My room had a fashionable wood floor and magnificent marble bathroom. There was a silk screen painting reminiscent of more romantic times. But the room also featured modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, an LCD TV, a safe, an extremely comfortable bed, and complimentary toiletries. All-around first-rate service!
Speaking of service, I was advised not to miss the breakfast buffet. And I definitely was not disappointed! I filled up on continental as well as local specialties, including Sicilian cakes, biscuits, ricotta and other cheeses. After breakfast, the hotel staff provided excellent directions for a jaunt into the city centre. First off, I did a bit of shopping along the Via Libertà, or the “Champs-Elysées of Sicily.” They had all one could want, but being in Italy after all, I spent most of the time perusing the goods at Gucci and Prada. Once my consumer spirit was satisfied (I expect my credit card company less so), I meandered along in the centre, managing to get myself lost at one point but not minding as I took in the stunning art nouveau and Liberty style architecture as well as jaw-dropping churches, palaces, and monuments. Palermo really is a magical place!
Back at the hotel for a bit of rest before my big night out. My friend suggested we meet before the opera (La Traviata by Verdi) just down the street from the hotel at Lo Scudiero, one of Palermo’s top restaurants. We had the chance to catch up over some truly succulent local flavours. Italian cuisine at its best! My friend had to arrive at the Teatro Massimo a bit before the show, so I enjoyed an Italian coffee at the bar before leaving. The night was warm but the breeze fresh as I made my way to the teatro. I couldn’t help but feel sentimental as I walked under the city’s glow. Before even seeing the opera I knew I was in for something special. A feeling that stayed with me during my whole stay...
