View all offersWalking towards the grand façade of the Pousada De Viseu, there's no question that you're heading towards a significant building. This luxurious hotel started life as the main hospital for the city of Viseu and is one of its oldest. Three virtuous statues watch over the old town and the entrance. My husband and I were immediately wowed by the lobby. Once an open-air courtyard within the building, it is now covered and transformed into a spacious, beautiful place to sit. The cloisters that surround it, and the white of their pillars against the bright mustard yellow of their interior walls, make for seriously impressive architecture and design.
Viseu itself is one of those hidden gems of a place to be a tourist, off the beaten track, and with a correspondingly authentic and peaceful ambience. Think narrow cobbled streets, leafy parks, grand squares, and a dominating cathedral, emerging from its hilltop vantage point. We loved exploring the streets at a leisurely pace, soaking up the architecture and exploring the region's gastronomy. The city is vibrant yet steeped in that wonderful nonchalant pace that only places so sun-baked can master. Personally, I think copious amounts of walking are a fantastic way to get to know a place. And a quick dip in the pool followed by reclining on the sun lounger was my favourite way to relax after exploring.
Our room was minimalist and modern, with a simple and elegant use of white and red, while the floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the room with light. We had a lounge area that was semi-separated from the bedroom, giving a homely feeling of spaciousness. Artwork depicting the history of the city adorned the walls.
My breakfast habit at home consists of little more than a few slurps of strong coffee and a scraping of butter on toast, but it helps to be accompanied by an appetite when you are greeted by a breakfast buffet like that of Pousada De Viseu. Fresh fruits, bread straight from the oven, artisan cheeses and tantalising pastries helped me on my way in the mornings. Our wonderful few days in Viseu were made extra memorable by our stay at the Pousada de Viseu Hotel.
