Vincci Puertochico ★★★★

The view from the four-star Hotel Vinicci Puertochio over the Puerto Chico shoreline and the expanse of calm water makes it one of the most desirable locations in the Cantabria’s capital.

Enter into a glossy ultra-modern reception area filled with polished wood, marble, glass and soft furnishings in tones of blue. Minimalist and bright, clean design is at the forefront of the hotel.

Shown to your room by the friendly staff, you will be delighted to find your simple but elegant room equipped with all the necessary commodities, as well as a glitzy blue tiled bathroom. Step out onto your own private balcony and you will be overwhelmed by the view of the marina and the seascape in its entirety. Imagine taking a break from your daily pursuits to read a book or sit with a drink whilst watching the boats come and go.

After enjoying an extraordinary breakfast buffet in the modern boutique environment, a short stroll down the Paseo de Castelar will take you to the beach where you can take in the fresh air and listen to the sound of the water lapping against the shore. After this perhaps you would like to take a half an hour walk (or short drive) along the coast to Península de la Magdalena, where you can find the Palacio de la Magdalena, which was gifted to the royal family by the city at the beginning of the 20th century. The palace’s Victorian style has since undergone many renovations, giving the building a unique characteristic. Looking out from the palace you can see Bikini Beach, which was the first place the garment was seen in the area, worn by foreign girls and students visiting the city. 

By now you’re bound to start feeling a bit peckish and for a real Spanish experience why not head back to the city to try out some tasty delicacies in the colourful and lively Mercado La Esperanza?

After lunch you’ll find plenty to occupy your time in the city, such as the Marítimo del Cantábrico Museum, which features a large aquarium tank, laboratories and many historical artefacts; and Santander’s cathedral - Catedral de la Asunción - where you can see Roman remnants under the glass floor.

Making your way back to the hotel, make sure you make a stop in at the Jardines de Pereda, which are named after the Cantabrian writer José María de Pereda. The writer’s work Escenas Montañesas (1864), which describes the plight of peasant mountain workers and fishermen in Santander, is etched into bronze and rock amongst the botanical delights of the gardens. Back at your accommodation, relax and rest your weary legs up on the breezy summer terrace, which shows off a lovely view of the marina below.

The hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, but you’re sure to find plenty of options for a meal close by. Come evening, walk the lamp-lit promenade past the impressive buildings and listen to the murmur of the many bustling cafes - this night time pursuit is a favourite amongst the locals. If you’re still not done for the day, just a hop-skip-and-jump from your residence you can find the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, a cultural landmark where you can hear music concerts and see various cultural events throughout the year.
