They say that opposites attract. Perhaps this is how, in this peaceful commune just north of Paris, surrounded by the beautiful French countryside, a majestic eighteenth century château sits just next to a strikingly modern hotel, a masterpiece in glass and copper. This marriage should not work, and yet it is marvellous. What could be better than staying in a grand old château? Staying next to one and gazing at its elegant exterior, of course! Sharing the same extensive grounds while surrounding yourself with the very best in contemporary design and luxuries. Modern but classic, in the countryside but so close to Paris, this is a hotel of contrasts, intriguing and different to anything around it. Sound good so far? This is without even mentioning the extraordinary cuisine at the 9 Bis restaurant, or the design and state of the art facilities of the bedrooms…

I am indecisive when it comes to booking my holidays. I can never decide, for example, between city break and countryside retreat, between an elegant old building and a modern hotel full of the latest futuristic facilities, or between saving my money to spend on activities or splashing out on a luxury hotel with a fancy restaurant. Thank God for VeryChic, who always know what I want better than I do – they somehow managed to cover all these bases with the Château de Mery!

Strolling through the lush, green forest, looking across the expansive, still ponds at the eighteenth century château, and listening to the birds singing and the rustling of the trees in the breeze, you would hardly believe that you are just half an hour away from the centre of Paris. It is a peaceful location, surrounded by countryside and history; the rolling green landscapes and elegant country house are exactly what we picture when we imagine rural France.

In the middle of its extensive grounds, the château itself lies on a fascinating spot with a rich history: the site of a 6th century priory, then a castle destroyed in the Hundred Years’ War, then a manor house unrecognisable from what we see today, changed so many times as the ownership of the land changed hands. It is no stranger to regeneration, and the latest update is the very modern Château de Mery hotel, which has thankfully left the grand renaissance château itself completely untouched.

The hotel could hardly be more different from the magnificent old building which it overlooks, apart from in its scale and luxury. A work of art constructed from glass and copper, it is sleek and stylish but not ostentatious or overbearing. Despite its contemporary touch, it remains warm and inviting, and on the inside it is even more impressive. Everywhere you look, the furnishings, colour schemes and decorations are all meticulously designed and brilliantly thought out, while the comfort of the guests and good service are always the hotel’s priorities.

Each of the 70 rooms and suites wows its guests with its chic design, continuing the theme of contrasts with a classic elegance but modern décor and facilities. The spacious king–sized beds are overlooked by graceful canopies, the large bathrooms are equipped with huge glazed lava sinks, and the rooms come with candelabras, coffee machines, Wi-Fi, complimentary bathrobes and slippers, enormous televisions and the very best Bose sound systems. This is a level of luxury that the lords of the old château could not even imagine, and you will almost feel like a modern day Louis XIV, wandering the halls of his majestic palace at Versailles.

Of course, no trip to France is complete without some fine dining, and here the Château de Mery again does not disappoint. Renowned chef Laurent Brun serves up some exquisite, inventive and beautifully presented dishes, a regal feast befitting of the impressive surroundings. I particularly loved spending a relaxed evening slowly but surely making my way through the refined dishes of the eight-course Menu degustation, while sitting on the floral and fragrant terrace and enjoying uneatable views over the park as the sun went down.

You should, of course, be sure to spend an afternoon exploring the grounds and enjoying a picnic along the banks of the river Oise, and a couple of evenings enjoying a glass of champagne and some superb food at the restaurant. However, further afield there is even more to keep you occupied. There is no need to go into details about all that La Ville-Lumière has to offer just half an hour away – Paris is legendary for its beauty and vast range of attractions. Charming market towns, scenic walks through the countryside, grand châteaux such as the magnificent Château de Chantilly (arguably home to France’s finest collection of art outside of the Louvre), and many more typically French delights are dotted around the surrounding area.

Whether you want to spend your days heading into the city or exploring the countryside, visiting a lavish palace or a picturesque village, sightseeing or simply enjoying the fine French gastronomy and wine, this location is perfect for everybody. Château de Méry **** Found in the charming little commune of Mery-sur-Oise, it enjoys a beautiful countryside location yet is astonishingly close (about 50 km north) to Paris.

BY PLANE

The closest airports to the hotel are those of Paris, which has three main airports: Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly along with the low-cost airport Paris –Beauvais, located a little further out of the city.

- From the UK: British Airways, Air France, CityJet and EasyJet all operate direct flights out of London. EasyJet also fly direct from Bristol, Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow while Ryanair fly direct from Manchester and Flybe from Birmingham.

- From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, direct flights are operated by Air Lingus, Air France and Ryanair. Aer Lingus also fly from Cork, while Ryanair also fly direct from Shannon.

- From Germany: Airlines flying direct from Berlin include: Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Air France, EasyJet and Germanwings. Air France and Germanwings also fly direct from Hamburg and Dusseldorf while Lufthansa also fly direct out of Frankfurt and Munich.

- From the Netherlands: Air France and KLM both provide direct flights out of Amsterdam.

- From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: SAS, Air France, KLM and Norwegian all fly direct from Stockholm in Sweden, Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen in Denmark. Low-cost airline Ryanair also fly out of Stockholm and Oslo while low-cost Easyjet also fly from Copenhagen. Finnair and Norwegian fly direct from Helsinki, Finland.

- From France: Air France operate shuttle flights from most major cities to Paris, including: Strasbourg, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Biarritz, Marseille and Nice.

FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

Whichever airport you fly into, we recommend renting a car to get to the hotel and explore during your stay. Major car rental companies are readily found at all the airports. Using public transport, one must (with the exception of Paris-Beauvais airport) first get to Paris Gare du Nord train station for a train to Méry-sur-Oise (see train information in the BY TRAIN section below).

From Paris Charles de Gaulle to Paris Gare du Nord:
- By taxi: Taxis are easily found outside each terminal, make sure to take an officially licensed taxi from the taxi rank. Fares vary considerably depending on traffic, but expect to pay anywhere between 45 to 55 euros.

- By train: This is generally the most cost-efficient method. The airport is connected to the city via Line B of the RER; and the train conveniently stops at Paris Gare du Nord along the way. Tickets cost 9.75€ or 6.85€ for children (aged 4- 9).

From Paris Orly to Paris Gare du Nord:
- By taxi: Taxis are easily found outside each terminal, make sure to take an officially licensed taxi from the taxi rank. Fares vary considerably depending on traffic, but expect to pay anywhere between 40 to 50 euros.

- By train: The airport is connected to RER Line B via the ORLYVAL bus service. The bus will drop you off at RER station Anthony. You can then take the RER right up to Paris Gare du Nord. The combined journey costs around 11.65€ and 5.80€ for children (4-10).

From Paris-Beauvais airport, direct to Mery-sur-Oise:
- By train: First, either take a taxi (around 11€) or shuttle bus (around 4€ per person) to Beauvais train station. Then take SNCF Transilien train service H line 27, direction of Gare de Nord, to Persan Beaumont; from here, change for train service H line 26, again direction of Gare du Nord and get off at Mery-sur-Oise. Beware; the last train leaves Beauvais around 8 pm.

BY TRAIN

Most international trains to Paris arrive at either Paris Gare du Nord or Paris Gare de l’Est. To transfer from Gare de l’Est to the Gare du Nord, take the metro M5 (orange) for one stop.

From the UK the train company Eurostar, operate trains from London St. Pancras International train station to Paris Gare du Nord. From Germany and the Netherlands direct trains terminating at either Paris Gare du Nord or Paris de l’Est, are provided by high-speed train company Thalys. From elsewhere in France and some neighboring countries, the TGV also operate fast trains.

How to get from Paris Gare du Nord train station the hotel:
The SNCF Transilien train H, line 26, runs regularly from Paris Gare du Nord to Mery-sur-Oise. The Journey time is around 40 minutes; beware the last direct train leaves around 10.50pm.
The hotel is around 1km from Mery station; you may take a taxi, or simply make the 10 minute walk to the hotel. Take a right up Av. Marcel Perrin, continue, and then take a right again up Rue de l'Isle Adam, continue until you see the hotel on your left.

BY CAR

From Paris–Porte Maillot, take the A86 in the direction of Cergy and then follow the A115, direction of Beauvais–Calais. Exit at Mery-sur-Oise Centre. Keep right and eventually turn left onto Av. de la Libération, follow straight and onto Av. Marcel Perrin then right up Rue de l'Isle Adam, continue until the hotel appears on your left.
