  • Châteaux de Lastours – these are four Cathar towers, and the site of a bloody siege, that stand apart but also exist as a single entity. The climb to them is not a walk in the park, but it’s worth the effort for the views, and for the sense of resounding history.
Route des 4 Châteaux, Lastours, France.
  • You would seriously regret not seeing the magnificent medieval city of Carcassonne staying so close by. Among its smaller attractions in the old city is the School Museum, a replica of a pre-war French classroom. Try writing with an old-fashioned pen without getting ink on your hands!
3 Rue du Plo, Carcassonne, France.
  • Lac de la Cavayere lies not far north of Carcassonne and is a beautiful place to go walking. Among the more adventurous activities are mini-golf or hiring a pedalo or a bike. A cafe serves snacks.
    RN113 Mont Legun, Carcassonne, France.
  • La Cantine de Robert is a unique little restaurant in a city that's geared up for tourists. You can't get more French than this little bijou eatery, and though the décor may be a bit retro, it's eclipsed by the organic and locally-sourced ingredients lovingly prepared by the proprietor.
36 rue Coste Reboulh, Carcassonne, France.
