Service you can bank on in the heart of Paris

By Victoria Lomax, your VeryChic correspondent
I hop over to Paris four or five times a year. Twice to meet up with old friends, once or twice on business and once in the pure interest of shopping! I used to flit back and forth between different hotels, frustrated at never finding that one place I could call my pied à terre in Paris. That ended in 2009 with the opening of the Banke Hotel ****, a member of the celebrated Derby Hotels Collection, in the 9th arrondissement. At the heart of the opulent Opera district, just a few steps from the major department stores and Place Vendôme, this converted 19th century bank is a marvellous example of Haussmannian architecture and a sumptuous setting to call home, even if only for a few days a year.

  • Most Parisians try to avoid the Metro like the plague. However, if you have time for a visit outside rush hour, there are a multitude of treasures to behold. Everyone is familiar with the art-deco entrances but did you know that you can read the Declaration of the Rights of Man from the French Revolution, dating back to 1789, on the walls of the Concorde station? If you don’t have time to visit all the museums, at least visit their Metro stations. A replica of Rodin’s The Thinker can be seen 10 metres underground in the Varenne station and Egyptian artwork can be admired in the Louvre-Rivoli station on line 1.
  • Have a meal in one of the many restaurants on the Place du Marché St Honoré. The locals love to have brunch here on Sundays. We recommend the Absinthe at n°24 (+33 1 49 26 90 04) Websites etc. missing.
