Portugal's second biggest city, Porto, attracts visitors with its romantic setting along the Rio Douro. An enchanting, rambling, hilltop city, it seduces tourists with its citrus-coloured buildings, elegant baroque churches, medieval monuments and grand beaux-arts buildings. The city has a slightly ramshackle and crumbling appearance, with narrow alleyways winding their way to the top of the hill, but this rustic charm only adds to its appeal. One of the city’s most iconic views is that of the celebrated Ponte de Dom Luís I. The old wooden rabelo boats pass underneath the striking curved bridge, ferrying their load of barrels filled with the city’s most famous export – port. While staying in this charming city, base yourself at in one of its most prominent neighbourhoods at the luxurious, modern, four-star BessaHotel Boavista.
