Zannos Melathron ★★★★★

Santorini could quite easily be confused with paradise – surrounded by the impossibly blue waters of the Aegean sea, it is soaked in warmth and that quintessentially Mediterranean golden glow. Among the charming whitewashed houses perched on the cliffs sits the Zannos Melathron *****, housed in an 18th century Renaissance-style mansion. Despite being an impressive structure, which hints at the refined elegance of the interiors, it perfectly complements the exquisite beauty of its surroundings.

Inside, walking through gorgeous wood panelling and marbled walls, we were soon shown to our Junior Suite, spacious and deliciously comfortable. I noted the bathtub and made a date for a long soak before breakfast the following morning with my book. The feel is truly indulgent and special, with marbled floors, beautiful furniture, soft lighting and a lounge area that makes it a wonderful refuge throughout the day.

Still, we did not hang around for too long before making our way outside to the swimming pool, which lies on a terrace overlooking the island and out to the sea. Lying on a sun lounger and soaking up the late-afternoon sun, I congratulated my husband on his latest romantic gesture. The views are extraordinary, and a unique sense of peace and serenity that I have not experienced before fills the air.

As the evening drew in, we moved to one of the sunny patios for a glass of white wine before making our way to the hotel restaurant. With exposed stone walls and lovely soft candlelit lighting, it is a beautiful setting for a romantic supper. A spectacular sunset made the backdrop as we dined on excellent Santorinian dishes made from fresh local produce, and fabulous wine straight from the hotel’s own cellars. “Magic” doesn’t quite do my experience at the Zannos Melathron ***** justice – I just hope this becomes a tradition for my husband and I every year!
