Feeling warm, soft sand between your toes is possibly one of the best feelings in the world, and in Mykonos you can experience this in abundance. The white sandy beaches that encircle the island and the shallow, turquoise waters that stretch out to the horizon are as close to paradise as you can get. But Mykonos doesn’t just boast picture-perfect scenery, although this is a major selling point. It’s also home to an array of island activities for every occasion, including watersports, quadbiking, and wine tasting, as well as a lengthy timeline of cultural heritage, dating back to a time when Greece was at the forefront of the ancient world. The mishmash of history, tradition, scenic views, and boredom-busting attractions make it the perfect place for anyone looking to get away from it all.
Then there’s the renowned party scene in Mykonos that has drawn the rich, famous, and hedonistic to the shores of the island, as well as a large gay community that have found a home away from home amongst the welcoming, friendly atmosphere. If, like me, you enjoy the quiet life but also enjoy getting stuck into the local nightlife, then the Mykonos Panormos Villas provide a secluded haven where you can experience the best of both worlds.
Before I stepped foot on Mykonos, I’d heard many a story about the thriving bar and club landscape there, and I was, at first, sceptical about how it would measure up to some of the quieter, lesser-visited Greek islands I had been to previously. But this was completely thrown out of the window when I arrived at the villa, which occupies a secluded part of the gloriously beautiful Panormos beach. Instead of large sunbathing crowds like I imagined, the beach sprawled out before me, practically empty. Even when there were a few too many people for my liking, I could retreat to the private pool and gardens that surround the Mykonos Panormos Villas, and enjoy the tranquillity of being alone.
Accommodating up to six people, the villa has all the nooks and crannies you need, wrapped up and presented in a sleek, modern outfit. The decked terrace is the perfect spot for watching the sunset at the end of the day, and the pool is on hand and ready for you to take a refreshing dip in, day or night. And, of course, if you want to feel the luxury of soft sand between your toes, then the beach is just 350m away, complete with the wonderful sound of gently lapping waves.
From the Mykonos Panormos Villas, it’s just a short distance to Chora, where all the action takes place. Here, I sat in one of the many bars that hug the shoreline and watched life happen around me. As dusk fell, the area crackled into life; colourful lights were turned on, music was turned up, and the mood was cranked up several notches.
Away from the lively nightlife scene, Mykonos is an embodiment of typical Greek culture and tradition, with a dash of the country’s expansive history thrown in for good measure. By day, I explored the numerous small churches that sit snugly amongst the soaring hills, and wandered through tiny villages that were a maze of whitewashed cottages and bright, trailing flowers. It’s easy to imagine why the Cyclades islands take centre stage in a series of Mythological stories spanning centuries, and the traditional, religious way of life is evident in many of the smaller towns on the island.
Back at the Mykonos Panormos Villas, I sat on the terrace looking out at the sun-splashed view. If I squinted hard enough, I was sure I could see Poseidon emerging from the turquoise waters, donning his party outfit and heading for the strip of lively bars.
