The Standard High Line ★★★★

Stylish landmark in the heart of Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking District.

By Esme Fox, VeryChic correspondent
New York, it’s a place so often depicted in films and TV shows that it becomes blurred in our minds; what is fiction and what is reality? It’s a city that exists both in our imaginations and in the real world, so it’s vital to be in the heart of it all to discover the true character of the Big Apple for yourself. In Manhattan’s uber-trendy Meatpacking District, an 18–storey tower arches over the High Line – America’s first overhead park, which was built on old elevated railway line. This is The Standard High Line ****, a luxury boutique hotel that is anything but standard.

Chic idea: to make the most of your time in New York, book your tickets in advance for a wide range of activities, here.

  • You may be in the city well-known for its cheesecake and bagels, but given its cosmopolitan nature, you may want to discover what delicious international food it has on offer too. If that’s the case, you can’t miss the Meatpacking District’s famous Spice Market (www.spicemarketnewyork.com), a treat for all the senses. Here you can enjoy the exotic flavours of Asian cuisine surrounded by a range of carvings, paintings and silk screens, hailing from the likes of Malaysia, Burma and India. 403 West 13th Street, New York, USA.
  • Forget Central Park, the new kid on the block is the High Line (www.thehighline.org). Built on a historic freight rail line, elevated above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side, it runs from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. Here you’ll find gardens of wildflowers and green oases to relax in, as well as a range of food vendors and cafes.
  • Take time to walk down Gansevoort Street to get a sense of how the area evolved from meatpacking and slaughterhouses to one of New York’s trendiest neighbourhoods. Here you’ll see old wooden warehouses juxtaposed against modern designs of steel and glass.
  • This may sound like the local you frequent back home, but the White Horse Tavern is a veritable New York institution. This was the place that Dylan Thomas famously went for a night of heavy drinking a few days before he died at the nearby Chelsea Hotel. Other famous writers and artists including Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison have also frequented the drinking house. 567 Hudson Street, New York, USA.

BY PLANE

  • New York is currently served by two main international airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), located around 12 mi (20 km) southeast of Lower Manhattan, and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), located around 15 mi (24 km) southwest of Midtown Manhattan, in New Jersey.

Between them they receive international flights from a large number of airlines and destinations, including from most capitals and many large cities across Europe.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

  • The airports of JFK and Newark are both located within 20-25 km (25-30 minutes) of the hotel, although routes and times depend on often heavy traffic conditions and can therefore be longer.

    - By taxi: a taxi is the most comfortable, but not the most economical solution. Above all, be sure to take a real, licensed taxi (choose one from the designated taxi rank at the airport). It costs about $ 50 from John F. Kennedy or Newark airport to Manhattan, plus any tolls on the way and the tip (15 %); all in all, the total cost is usually around $ 70.

    - By bus: The NYC Airporter run services between John F. Kennedy airport and the city centre; get off at Port Authority Bus Terminal. (Around $16 One-Way and $29 Round Trip.)
Meanwhile, the Olympia Newark Express runs from Newark Liberty airport to the city centre; get off at Port Authority Bus Terminal. (Around $16 One-Way and $28 Round Trip.)
From Port Authority Bus Terminal, you can take the subway service A, C or E from 34th Street – Penn Station down to 14th Street – Eighth Avenue.

    - By private shuttle: You can also take a private shuttle (capacity: 8 people maximum), from Shuttle New York, which will drop passengers off in front of their hotel. You can book in a shared or private shuttle, however you must book before you leave.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

  • - Subway: 14th Street – Eighth Avenue subway station is served by services A, C & E (blue) and is a 6 minute walk from the hotel. When exiting the metro walk west down West 14th Street; then the third left down Washington Street, the hotel will be on the right.

    - Bus: The bus stop Hudson W 14th St / Washington St is two minutes down the road from the hotel, served by lines M11, M12, M14A & M14D.
