Hotel Saray ★★★★

Modern and ancient worlds collide in this contemporary hotel with an Arabic twist.

By Esme Fox, VeryChic correspondent
Soft chatter and the clinking of glasses echo through the steep cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses, accompanied by the backing music of mournful flamenco songs. And standing above it all is the magnificent Alhambra Palace – this is Granada. Being Spain’s last Moorish stronghold, Granada has many vestiges of its exotic past – graceful Arabic doorways, enchanting tea shops and Aladdin’s-cave-like shops filled with items such as sequinned slippers, glass tea lights and lamps. If you want all the comforts of a contemporary hotel, yet with ornate Arabic décor, then the Hotel Saray **** will more than satisfy.

  • Granada does churros slightly differently to the rest of Spain – here, they’re fat and squidgy rather than thin and crispy and would be called porras anywhere else in the country. For the best in town try the Alhambra Café, set on the pretty Bib Rambla Square.
  • Free tapas dishes may have you grinning from ear to ear, but vegetarians may not be so happy, as hardly any of the dishes come without meat or fish. However, head to La Pajuana bar and tell them you’re a vegetarian, and you’ll be treated to veritable veggie feasts. Calle Virgen del Rosario 12, Granada, Spain.
  • Don’t walk up to the Alhambra along the traditional route along Cuesta de Gomérez - instead walk along Paseo de los Tristes until you reach the end. Cross the small bridge and head up Cuesta del Rey Chico. This route of old whitewashed houses and cobblestone steps runs alongside the walls of the Alhambra itself, as well as a pretty bubbling stream.
  • For a bar with a bit of a difference, walk along the bustling Calle Navas until you reach El Tabernáculo. You’ll know when you’ve found it because every inch of the tiny establishment is covered in memorabilia from Granada’s Semana Santa or Holy Week, during Easter. These include pictures of the tearful Virgin, statues of Christ, candles and religious robes. And the bar’s soundtrack is the solemn procession music that accompanies the Semana Santa parades. Calle Navas 27, Granada, Spain.
  • The pomegranates. The word granada actually means pomegranate in Spanish and if you look carefully, you’ll find this exotic red fruit hidden throughout the city – on lampposts, fountains, drain covers, door handles, and shaped into the cobbled plazas and metal bollards along the street. In fact, the more you look, the more you’ll find.
