Milà Apartamentos

Feel right at home in one of Barcelona’s most authentic and lively neighbourhoods

By Edward Fairbairn, VeryChic correspondent
My love affair with Barcelona began many years ago, and I have since been to visit more times than I could count. From sipping sangria on the beach to popping in and out of my favourite art galleries, I can happily spend a whole week in the Catalan capital with no two days being even remotely the same. This time it was not all about me, however. The whole family was in tow, so there was only one option – the brand new Milà apartments! I have been fortunate enough to visit several superb, luxurious hotels in my favourite city, but is there really anything more luxurious than having your very own home from home for your afternoon siesta? Spacious, comfortable and exceptionally located, our apartment proved to be the perfect spot to rest, recharge the batteries and ready ourselves for yet another onslaught on Barcelona’s seemingly endless array of things to see, do, taste and discover…

Barcelona

Spain

Milà Apartamentos has a fantastic location in the Gràcia district of Barcelona. The area, which was its own town before being swallowed by the city, lies between the historic centre and Gaudi’s famous Park Guell. It maintains the same vibrancy of the centre with a more local atmosphere.

BY PLANE

  • Barcelona is served mainly by Barcelona-El Prat Airport, found just outside the city, around 15km from the city centre. Low-cost airlines, mainly Ryanair, also fly to Girona–Costa Brava Airport, 12km south of Girona and around 100km north of Barcelona. It is quicker, easier and cheaper to get to Barcelona from El-Prat than Girona, worth considering when choosing flights.

From the UK: British Airways, Iberia and low cost Monarch, Vueling and EasyJet all operate direct flights out of London. EasyJet also fly direct from Bristol and Belfast while Ryanair fly direct from Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, you can find direct flights operated by Aer Lingus and Ryanair, while Ryanair also fly direct from Cork.

From Germany: Carriers flying direct out of Berlin include: Air Berlin, Iberia, Vueling, EasyJet and Germanwings.

Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines also fly direct out of Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich. Vueling Airlines also fly out of Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich.

From the Netherlands: KLM, Iberia, Vueling and Transavia all provide direct flights from Amsterdam to Barcelona while Transavia also fly direct out of Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian and Vueling fly direct from Stockholm in Sweden, Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark. Ryanair also fly out of Stockholm and Oslo. Finnair, Iberia, Vueling and Norwegian fly direct from Helsinki, Finland.

From France: Air France, Iberia, Vueling and EasyJet all fly direct from Paris. Vueling airlines further provide direct flights from Lyon, Toulouse, Marseille and Nice. EasyJet also fly direct from Lyon and Nice.

TRANSFER FROM THE AIRPORT

  • Getting to the hotel from Barcelona-El Prat airport:
    - By taxi: Taxis are located outside all the main terminal exits and operate all night. Journeying to the city centre usually takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. The cost is around €25 from T2 and €30 from T1 (which is further), with surcharges for luggage. Be sure to take an official, black and yellow Barcelona taxi.

    - By train: The cheapest and fastest way of getting to and from the airport. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes to Barcelona, taking around 25 minutes. A single airport ticket costs more than a regular single and is not necessarily the best option. Possibly the most cost-efficient, especially if you plan on using public transport during your stay, is the T10. At just under €10, it is valid for 10 journeys (including the airport zone) with no expiry date. It can also be shared by more than one person at a time and works on trains, buses and trams.
When taking the train you need to get off at Passeig de Gracia, from there switch to the metro and take the line 4 (yellow) up three stops to Joanic.

    - By bus: Aerobus run express buses between the airport and city centre. Tickets are €5.90 for a single and €10.20 return. You should get off at  Plaça de Catalunya. From there switch to the metro and take the line 1 (red) for one stop to Urquinaona and then change for line 4 (yellow) for four stops up to Joanic; or take a taxi.

At night there are two night buses NitBus, the N17 from Terminal 1 and the N16 from Terminal 2. A single ticket is €2.15 (you can also use the T10). They also stop around Plaça de Catalunya.

Getting to the hotel from Girona–Costa Brava airport:
    - By bus: The most convenient method; the Barcelona Bus to Barcelona city centre, run by Sagalés, coincides with Ryanair flight times. A return ticket costs €25 and can be purchased from the Sagalés booth at the Girona airport. The bus goes to Barcelona Nord bus station and the closest metro from there is Arc de Triomf (line 1, Red); it is then one stop to Urquinaona for a change to line 4 (yellow) and a further four stops to Joanic. Those not arriving on a Ryanair flight should check to see if their flight coincides with a Barcelona Bus, otherwise it may be necessary to take a train from Girona city centre.

    - By train: First take a bus (part of the Sagalés service) to Girona city centre -  buses leave every 30 minutes and take 25 minutes (returning, buses leave on the hour from Girona). A ticket is around €2 single and €4 return. From there take a train to Barcelona-Passeig de Gracia, taking around an hour, and costing around 10€. From Sants, take the metro line 5 (blue) across four stops to Verdaguer.

BY METRO

  • The closest metro stop is Joanic served by line 4 (yellow): walk down Carrer de l'Escorial turning right onto Travessera de Gràcia, then take a left onto Carrer Milà I Fontanals.
The next closest metro is Verdaguer served by line 5 (blue): walk up Carrer de Girona, straight onto Carrer Milà I Fontanals.
The same distance away is Fontana metro, served by line 3 (green): Walk down Carrer Gran de Gràcia and turn left onto Travessera de Gràcia, continue along and take a right at Carrer Milà I Fontanals.
