Time to follow in the footsteps of the old-school elite and spend winter in sunnier climes. Or at least take a small holiday to cure the January blues! I am therefore headed to a classic favourite, none other than the Italian Riviera. Mild temperatures, sparkling seas, lush landscapes, charming seaside towns, fishing villages and elegant Belle Epoque architecture from when the rich of the turn of the last century made this their winter playground. It seems most appropriate, given its luxurious traditions, to choose an impeccably renovated 17th century palace, the beautiful Europa Hotel Design Spa 1877.

  • Make the most of the proximity to the port and catch a boat to Portofino, just opposite, to visit the pretty, elegant fishing village, which has become a popular jet-set destination.
  • Hop on a train and visit the myriad of interesting places to see on the Italian Riviera, be it the scenic beauty of the Gulf of Genoa and birthplace of Christopher Columbus or the rugged and brightly colourful Cinque Terre.
  • In Genoa, apart from visiting the largest Aquarium in the world, it is well worth a trip to the Museum of the Sea, where you can board the reconstruction of a 17th century galley or the Nazario Sauro S518 submarine and you see an exhibition on Italian emigration to the United States between 1892 and 1914.

BY PLANE

  • Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) is located 7.4 km / 4.6 mi west of Genoa.

    The airport receives a number of regular and seasonal flights from around Europe.

FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • - By hotel transfer: We recommend using the hotel transfer service to/from Genoa airport which is available on request for a surcharge of 90€ per journey - Maximum of 4 people

    - By car: If you want to rent a car from the airport and drive to the hotel the journey will take you around half an hour. When leaving the airport get onto the A10/E25/E80 from Via Pionieri e Aviatori d'Italia and Via Enrico Melen then continue onto the A12/E80 to Rapallo. Take exit Rapallo from A12/E80. Continue on Via Sant'Anna. Take Via Goffredo Mameli and Via della Libertà to Via Milite Ignoto/SS1 the hotel will be on your left.

    - By train and bus: There is a Flybus shuttle service that runs from the airport to the Sestri Ponente Aeroporto railway station. The Flybus operates every 15 minutes and costs 1.50€. From the railway station it is possible to reach the main cities.

    - By taxi: Taxis are available outside the arrivals area. The journey to the city centre takes around 10 minutes and costs around 8€.
