The Aegean Sea is swept with currents of mystery. The island of Mykonos is the fabled home of the Nereids, the island of Sifnos was said to be the favourite of Apollo, while Ariadne was abandoned on the island of Naxos by Theseus. According to some theories, the island of Santorini could even have been home to the legendary lost city of Atlantis, and it's towards Santorini that we set our compass. Arriving on this volcanic island you are met with a swirl of facts and folklore which invite wild imaginings. The Artemis Suites on the craggy west coast of the island, is an ideal place from which to explore, with its striking, traditional Greek good looks and a generous helping of magic.

They say that Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon and hunting, chose to reside on the coast, where the defining line between land and sea becomes blurred. Perched on a seaside clifftop on a volcanic island, I understand at once why the Artemis Suites hotel has adopted the name of Apollo's twin. Clinging to the rugged bluff that plunges into the blue Aegean Sea, the hotel’s dainty white houses are the perfect complement to this natural landscape on Santorini's west coast.

As soon as I arrive, I'm accompanied by the wide smiles of the meticulous staff to the Junior Suite. The walls and the furnishings are all immaculately white, but are gently warmed by tangerine curtains that lend the room a cosy feel. Stepping onto the balcony, the view leaves me speechless: the sea stretches out to the horizon and beyond with tiny rocky islands breaking its smooth surface here and there.

I decide to start my exploration of the Cyclades with something close to my heart - food. For this first night, I chose to dine at the hotel restaurant. The food is delicious, fresh and beautiful in its simplicity, although I'm certain it could never taste quite so nice if not for the beauty of the vista of the setting sun.

After a good night's sleep in my eminently comfortable bed, I return to the restaurant for an abundant breakfast as I watch the boats bobbing prettily in the Caldera Bay, another memory that I file away. The most beautiful island in the Cyclades overflows with treasures; to the east, a host of archaeological ruins each more spectacular than the last, to the south, dazzling black sand beaches hemmed in by red rocks, and to the north, characteristic villages with white buildings and their characteristic blue roofs.

Whenever I'm back at the hotel, home from my wanderings across this island whose crescent form recalls the moon of Artemis, I can't help but indulge in a plunge in the Jacuzzi. I sink into the bubbles and allow the jets to pummel my weary muscles. Most secrets of the Cyclades don't give themselves up so easily, but of one thing I'm certain; the Artemis Suites hotel is definitely one of them.

A gentle stroll along the little streets of the quintessentially Greek village of Pyrgos, the highest on the island. The views from the summit are outstanding.
Fans of archaeology will be in their element in Santorini. After a visit to the Archaeological Museum, head to the south of the island to discover the prehistoric remains of Akrotiri and the ancient ruins of the city of Thera on the east coast.
