View all offersTucked down one of the small side streets, off one of the cities main arteries, you’ll find a gigantic heavy wooden door studded with metal. You can just imagine that this is the type of door that would grace the entryways inside the Alhambra Palace itself.
This however, is not the doorway to a palace or a church, but the welcoming Hotel Monjas del Carmen. Clean lines of white walls and glass, punctuated by old photographs and paintings greet you as you step inside. It’s understated and modern with the odd touch of Andalusian charm – carved wood furniture and stone fountains.
Friendly and charismatic staff will welcome you and show you to your spacious room – a comfy, minimalist space with polished wood floors, large comfy beds and full-sized bathrooms. Step up to your private balcony and you’ll see Granada’s historic streets spread before you and the soaring mountains behind.
When you’re ready to explore you won’t have to go far as you’re right in the historic heart of the city. Granada is best explored on foot and nowhere is particularly far – most sights can be reached within a 30-minute walk. From your hotel it’s just a few minutes to the magnificent Granada Cathedral and the romantic Carerra del Daro, the cobblestone walkway running alongside the River Daro and beneath the Alhambra. Punctuated by small arched bridges, it opens out onto a spectacular plaza filled with fountains, musicians, flamenco dancers, tapas bars and one of the best views of Alhambra you’ll see.
After your exploration it’ll be time to think about getting a bite to eat. Luckily food is one thing that’s never hard to find in Granada, as the city is one of the only places left in Spain where free tapas are served with every drink. When you’re ready for something more substantial though, the hotel’s restaurant – Los Manueles is a good place to start.
Dating back to 1917, Los Manueles has moved around to various locations within Granada, but has always remained a city favourite. With its bright and welcoming décor, it’s a great place for set lunch menus or à la carte dinners or a bite of tapas on the outdoor terrace.
Back at Monjas del Carmen for the night, fall asleep with the enchanting sounds of flamenco still in your ears and enjoy a restful and peaceful night’s sleep.
The morning brings stunning views from your balcony – the whitewashed hillside of the Albaicín neighbourhood and the snow-capped peaks surrounding the city. You can choose whichever type of breakfast you prefer at the Los Manueles restaurant, but we recommend traditional Andalucían tostada con tomate – a toasted baguette topped with freshly mashed tomatoes, a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of salt.
While your morning may be spent visiting the city’s prized possession – the Alhambra and the Generalife gardens, spend your afternoon exploring the captivating Albaicín district – a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on a hilltop. The lower streets are filled with Moroccan teahouses and Arabic-style shops selling colourful lamps, leather bags and sequinned slippers, while the upper area is more residential with idyllic-looking whitewashed houses and fountain-filled squares. And when the sun is about to set this is one of the best places to be in the city – at the atmospheric Mirador de San Nicolas, which comes alive with the sounds of mournful voices and the lilt of the Spanish guitar. Here with the city bathed in a golden light is where you’ll get that classic shot of you sat in front of the magical Alhambra Palace.
Monjas del Carmen provides the perfect Granada base to return to, ideally positioned, with that hint of Andalucían architecture and all the modern comforts you could want.
