Chateau les Merles ★★★★

Gastronomic extravagance and family-run hospitality at a historically important chateau.

By Siena Morrell, VeryChic correspondent
Originally built in 1677, the Chateau Les Merles was almost entirely revamped in the nineteenth century by Baron Mesclop, a general of Napoleon Bonaparte’s. The chateau has preserved neither the battle scars nor military austerity of Mesclop’s residency; however, the pomp and grandeur that characterized the Empire are evoked subtly in the hotel’s luxurious, avant-garde restoration. Nowadays, it is the warm, friendly proprietor, Jan Van Grinsven, and an efficient, diligent team that give guests a welcome befitting an emperor when they approach the threshold of this charming estate.
