Grand Hotel & La Pace ★★★★★

Italy may be renowned for its charm, but there is something about Tuscany that puts it head and shoulders above the rest. Filled with cultural wonders, a fascinating history, spectacular views, and plenty of places to rejuvenate, it is the perfect place to recharge and unwind. The Grand Hotel & La Place provides all of this and more, bringing together the focal points of Tuscany in one impressive building.

Built back in 1870, the five-star hotel is a fine example of traditional Tuscan architecture. The grand backdrop has inspired a number of filmmakers over the years, and it was the stomping ground of designer Christian Dior, the namesake of one of the suites! If, like me, you arrive at night, you will get to see the Grand Hotel lit up in a glorious, colourful show. This sets a fitting precedent for the opulence inside - with huge chandeliers hanging from high ceilings, intricate frescoes by Galileo Chini, and the traditional atmosphere that oozes through the centuries-old passageways.

Once shown to my room, I can fully revel in the grandiosity of the hotel, basking in the glow of the neutral walls, plush curtains, and king-sized bed. It is the vision of luxury without ostentation, especially the simple but spacious bathroom with its shiny, marble features.

After settling in, I make my way to the terrace restaurant, where I order a light cocktail and tuck into delicious plates of the finest Italian gastronomy. The hotel also has a Grill, which offers a less formal affair but with equally delicious cuisine. For my first night, though, I was ready to be wined and dined in style – and the Grand Hotel delivered above and beyond its means.

When it starts to get late, I retire to my palace of a room to prepare for the busy day I have planned for tomorrow. After a luxurious night’s sleep, I enjoy a hearty breakfast before dipping into the relaxing wellness centre and peaceful indoor pool. Once well and truly refreshed, I bask by the outdoor pool under the warm Tuscan sun before I head to the nearby beach and splash about in the shallows.

Soaking up the age-old landscapes of Tuscany and revelling in the peace and quiet, I understand what people say about timeless Tuscany; I could certainly stay at Grand Hotel & La Pace forever.
