Cypress trees as far as the eye can see, enchanting perfumes, a light that is unique to this part of the world. I had not got my destinations confused. I was definitely in the heart of Tuscany, this sublime region where the real Italy gently reveals itself to the appreciative visitor. I was surrounded by a natural park and a good distance from the beautiful towns that tourists generally crowd to. I wanted to reconnect with myself, listen to my body, live to the rhythm of the sun. Someone told me about the Petriolo Spa Resort ***** UNA Esperienze, and straight away it sounded like perfection. As I got to know it better, it certainly did not let me down.
The hotel owes its reputation to the Petriolo hot springs, which bubble out of the ground here at a temperature of around 40°. Rich in minerals and oligo-elements, this water has therapeutic benefits that have been recognised for centuries. I didn’t need any more detail to persuade me, and so I was off at once to explore the superb hotel spa. Swimming pools at different temperatures, massaging water jets, chromotherapy, waterfalls, sauna. You’ve got it: water is a key element around here. I was practically a mermaid by the end of my stay! For a real boost, there is also a dedicated relaxation sun lounge space. I must say that the few minutes I spent on that sun lounger were some of the best of the whole experience. And everywhere, you can enjoy the gorgeous views over the Italian countryside.
Obviously you are going to say that you don’t imagine spending your entire trip in the water. And I understand. Like me, your idea of Italy goes hand in hand with good food. You will not be disappointed here. A great food lover, I tested both restaurants : traditional food, homemade pasta, chianina: the generous Italian food that we all know and love : an inventive menu where classic, seasonal products are put together by chef Mattia Mana. It boasts both an excellent wine list and a spectacular view over the Tuscan countryside.
What about the bedrooms? Well, they are luxurious, inviting, Italian. The Deluxe rooms are spacious (25 m²), and they look out over either the resort or the Tuscan countryside. Some of them have a small terrace, others have large windows that let in the sun. The furniture is typically Italian and the flooring is entirely made of marble. King size bed, LCD screen: you’ll be able to luxuriate in between your busy days. And just in case you want to get back in the water, the bathrooms all have a large bathtub!
Last but not least, children are welcome here. They can access (under your supervision) some of the swimming pools and there is a fun track for them to try out in the park. Indoors, there is a games room with everything they need to have fun.
You see, with a little bit of help, it’s not too hard to be good to yourself after all!
