View all offersIt was the Romans who first developed the concept of thermal baths and evidence shows that they came to Pisa to construct a bathhouse on the site now home to the Bagni di Pisa Palace & Spa Resort. The strikingly elegant 18th century building that stands there today was the summer residence of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 2004, the building and spa were renovated, using traditional construction methods and materials whenever possible. The result is a fabulous 5-star thermal resort, member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World association thanks to its exceptional location, service, cuisine, and facilities.
It’s a good job that there is a wonderful team of professional masseuses and physical therapists on hand because you will be straining your neck to take in all the beauty of the interior decoration. The walls and vaulted ceilings are the canvas for heavenly frescoes and the marble floors stretch and gleam as far as the eye can see. Roman statues and Grecian urns testify to the historical significance of the resort and remains of the ancient bathhouse can be admired via the glass floor as make your way to the courtyard pool.
One thing that may strike you as you get to know the premises is that most guests walk around in bathrobes and slippers. It seems a little incoherent in such a regal setting, but you’ll soon get used to it. This is not just a hotel with a spa – the hotel is the spa. It is a sanctuary to unwind and let go. State-of-the-art technology blends with ancient rituals, offering guests an extensive range of treatments for all needs and ailments.
As you can imagine, fried food and saturated fats are scarce on the menu here. Chef Umberto Toscano and his brigade of top chefs, prepare succulent meals that are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate. Fresh produce and ancient Tuscan recipes combine to tickle the tastebuds without piling on the pounds.
While it may be unfair to say that the Pisans didn’t exactly master building towers, they have certainly perfected pampering the senses at the Bagni di Pisa Palace & Spa Resort.
